Call the airline you are flying on. I carry my tripod and monopod in my suitcase.

I've had no problem with a monopod in my carry on luggage.

That said, I did read that "hiking sticks" with a sharp point might not get through. Some monopods have sharp, steel feet. Mine is rubber.

I'm also using a cheap monopod. If they take it, I'll get another cheap one!

All airlines regulations differ. It is a shame they don't all standardize and all have the same rule book.
As been suggested above, contact the airline you are flying with.

The airline will never know you have the monopod, so they is irrelevant. TSA will know you have it, but they should not bother you with it.

Only once has a TSA agent asked me about it, and only because it was not already inside my carry-on bag. I have since gotten a slightly smaller monopod (and slightly larger bag), so they never blink. It's been the ball head which has caused a pause, because the knobs confused the x-ray operator. Now I take that out and put it with my laptop, and it is fine too.

There are standardized regulations: TSA.

Airlines do vary a little with what you can carry on and how they enforce it. They leave what you put in the carry for the TSA to deal with.

In other words, TSA will let you through with a purse, brief case, camera bag and suitcase stuffed with what ever you want. When you get to the gate you will find out how many and what size items you keep and what will get "gate checked".

Most airlines will tell you that you do not have the overhead bin space above your seat as guaranteed space for you. All you have that is guaranteed is the space under the seat in front of you. If you are last to board, the overhead bins can be full!

Just be aware that if it is in checked baggage, TSA will undoubtedly--like 100% certainty--open the bag and rummage through it just to make sure the monopods is what it is.

Airlines do vary a little with what you can carry ... (show quote)

The airline will control how much you can have as your carry-on, but not what.

Well, within their published guidelines. No weapons or knitting needles. But I get your point. :)

But isn't that is parroting TSA regulations? Airlines didn't decide that knitting needles would be a problem, TSA decided that.

Missed your most salient point about the airlines as opposed to TSA. My bad.

No problem. I was responding to the suggest that the OP contact the airlines.
