Top ten metro areas probably have LEO's who are or can be adequately trained, and occasionally need major equipment. The incident in the OP was one. But its pretty rare.

Small town forces being given military equipment is nuts. They do not have the training to know when to use it or how to use it . It just goes to their heads!

I gotta big gun, you better get outta my way!

What did that cop in Ferguson say to the protesters as he aimed his AR15 at them? "I will F##king kill you...shut the F##K UP!"

Was he adequately trained?

The other side of the coin is that the LOOTERS finally were stopped when the owners took out their own shoguns and stood firm in front of their shops.

One only has to harken back to the North Hollywood Shootout of Feb 28, 1997. The would-bank robbers were better armed than the ENTIRE Los Angeles police and sheriff depts. It was only after a gunshop owner offered up his stock of AR-15s and ammunition to the cops trying to end the rampage that the playing field was leveled and the shootout ended. Ten wounded LEOs and civilians and two dead scumbags. The scoreboard could have been much worse if the LEOs had to continue using their pistols and shotguns which weren't doing anything else but pissing off the perps further.

Does the incumbent realize that many LEOs in police depts all over the US are former military servicemen and women who learned long ago how to handle those "nasty pieces of hardware".

As for the police tactical show of force, ask anyone if that doesn't get their attention and make them want to behave if their plans were going to be different. IMHO, a show of force is more of a deterrent that will prevent the need to use lethal force, NOT ENCOURAGE IT -- especially in the US of A !!!

The incumbent needs to get some gonads of his own instead of listening to his young and/or inexperienced political advisors or his barking dogs.

His worse advisor is named Eric Holder !!! The best thing that the incumbent can do for himself and his party is fire that guy's ass ASAP !!!

I agree with you on this.
Our policemen need more effective firepower. When I was a reserve officer I carried my own weaponry and ammunition at my expense. The chiefs always asked me if I was expecting an armed invasion to which I answered, "It's better to carry a condom and not need it than to need one and not have it.

I only had to use my superior firepower once to get 3 perps to give up. That was my M-14 with 7.62X51 full metal jacketed rounds fired completely through both sides of their car and into a brick wall behind them. I discharged one magazine of 20 rounds and we yelled out that I would switch to full automatic firing and spray the entire car. They threw out 3 handguns and 2 knives before screaming at the top of their lungs not to fire again and stood up with their arms straight up in the air with palms open. No clenched fists!

Overkill yes, anyone hurt, NO! Police 3, perps 0, happy ending to the story. Zero collateral casualties.

Just take a look at how search warrants are being served in this country for all kinds of nonviolent offenses... No, the police have gone much to far along the path of militarization. The have new toys and use them in all the wrong circumstances.

Police officers that have misused their power do not need to be on the force. With superior firepower comes superior responsibility!

To me, that's one of the major problems.
Military servicemen learn to shoot anything perceived as a threat. Shoot it first. Continue shooting it until the threat is neutralized.
That's military.
Police aren't here to neutralize threats with extreme prejudice. They are here to keep the peace.
Two very different goals.

Bill,

Not necessarily so. I was in the Marine Corps for a total of 7+ years in the 60's and 70's. I received infantry officer training but was a pilot and then an Air Traffic Control Officer. It's the person behind the trigger that must make the split second decision that may either maim or kill the person in front of the barrel. You must do so mostly in a split second. Wartime combat is one thing, fellow American Citizens is another. They are not interchangeable terms. A former military trained veteran now a police officer is less apt to kill a fellow American than possibly wound him enough to incapacitate him. He is aware of the difference between a perp and an enemy combatant.
