One only has to harken back to the North Hollywood Shootout of Feb 28, 1997. The would-bank robbers were better armed than the ENTIRE Los Angeles police and sheriff depts. It was only after a gunshop owner offered up his stock of AR-15s and ammunition to the cops trying to end the rampage that the playing field was leveled and the shootout ended. Ten wounded LEOs and civilians and two dead scumbags. The scoreboard could have been much worse if the LEOs had to continue using their pistols and shotguns which weren't doing anything else but pissing off the perps further.

Does the incumbent realize that many LEOs in police depts all over the US are former military servicemen and women who learned long ago how to handle those "nasty pieces of hardware".

As for the police tactical show of force, ask anyone if that doesn't get their attention and make them want to behave if their plans were going to be different. IMHO, a show of force is more of a deterrent that will prevent the need to use lethal force, NOT ENCOURAGE IT -- especially in the US of A !!!

The incumbent needs to get some gonads of his own instead of listening to his young and/or inexperienced political advisors or his barking dogs.

His worse advisor is named Eric Holder !!! The best thing that the incumbent can do for himself and his party is fire that guy's ass ASAP !!!

Just take a look at how search warrants are being served in this country for all kinds of nonviolent offenses... No, the police have gone much to far along the path of militarization. The have new toys and use them in all the wrong circumstances.

True that!

Top ten metro areas probably have LEO's who are or can be adequately trained, and occasionally need major equipment. The incident in the OP was one. But its pretty rare.

Small town forces being given military equipment is nuts. They do not have the training to know when to use it or how to use it . It just goes to their heads!

I gotta big gun, you better get outta my way!

What did that cop in Ferguson say to the protesters as he aimed his AR15 at them? "I will F##king kill you...shut the F##K UP!"

Was he adequately trained?

To me, that's one of the major problems.
Military servicemen learn to shoot anything perceived as a threat. Shoot it first. Continue shooting it until the threat is neutralized.
That's military.
Police aren't here to neutralize threats with extreme prejudice. They are here to keep the peace.
Two very different goals.

Although there may be some concerns as indicated by your post, but I assume that a warrant would not be served for a parking ticket. If I was a LEO that neede to serve a warrant for a suspected drug interdiction or an escaped convict, I would want to go in hoping for a peaceful resolution but expecting something more serious. If there is no need for me to use what I'm carrying, it's a great day ! If not, I want to go home to my family too.

Have you looked at some other examples of a militarized police force. Look at German LEOs patrollingone of their airports. Those aren't huka pipes and the latest vest fashions . Germany is one of the most stable nations in the Western world.

Sorry folks, I tried to fix the link but obviously failed. Just use your favorite search engine and query "German police patrolling airport" or how ever you want to see the same results

The police have become too militarized! Why is it when protecting our borders we don't use our military? Or if they are called up to aid, they are used as a secondary force. They claim they are trained to shoot to kill and don't know the law of the land.

Couple of years ago the police knew they were going to raid a house that they had suspicion of illegal activity and had a search warrant. Nothing of illegal activity was discovered at the crime scene. Reason I say crime scene, they shot and killed the owner of the house.

The set up on this was that the owner worked at the mines at night. His brothers were thought of by the police as possible people of interest in some illegal activity. They wanted to raid this house because of suspicion of hidden illegal items being stored there.

The police waited for this man to get home in the morning, go to bed and then raid! His wife saw through pulled shades men approaching with guns, and woke him up stating men with guns outside. He in a daze got his gun and knelt in the hall. Up to this point, no police announcement had been made. 10 sec before they kicked in the door was when they started yelling police. They entered saw him with a gun and opened fired.

For some reason I recall in the old days police did not want the perp they were after in a secured and a place of his choosing because it increased the danger of many magnitude a danger to themselves and others. They would have stopped this man as he left work, thus depriving him of these important choices. Then raided the house.

Here because of the military-ness of the police and they wanting to give some validation of the cost of swat teams, they go about into dangerous situation deliberately! Yes they want to go home at night, but they are too quick on the trigger, and yet are not setting up situations to prevent deadly confrontations. Rush in, be overbearing, and quick on the trigger. That is exactly what the military does. And they don't want them on our borders, but let the same senerio for the citizens within the borders.

When was the last time you checek out The Mision of Homeland Securiry?

http://www.dhs.gov/mission

Why do we need the Military to guard our borders. That is the job of The US Border Patrol and US Customs. Plus if it is the Mission of HS to enforce the immigration laws why is BO simply not doing it.

Why does HS have to guard our politicians and dignitaries? Isn't that the job of the US Secret Service?

Why do they have to monitor terrorists? Isn't that covered by the FBI?

I think HS is not needed and should be eliminated. BO is using them like it is own private army to spy on the American public.

The Posse Comitatus Act (law) prevents the use of fed use of military w/i the US to enforce local laws.

However, the Gov of any state can request and deploy his National Guard w/i his state. This has been done hundreds of times to assist with national or man-made disasters (hurricane after-effects mitigation, riots)

Govs from AZ and TX have used their National Guard on our southern borders, but only in support capacities like intel analysis or at observation posts overlooking the border. I don't know if the NG was armed and actually had any ammo.

Only CBP agents were used to go out, find and detain illegal border crossers.

My comment about NG arms and ammo is intentional. I remember after 9/11 when airports were finally reopened and airlines were able to go back into the friendly skies, NG elements were patrolling the Washington National Airport. They looked very strac in their uniforms and M-16s. Only one thing made me say WTF ??? The NG were walking through the airport w/o magazines in their rifles !!!! I didn't see any mags being carried in pockets or anywhere else either !!!

Assuming that the NG had their mags -- which I don't think they did -- if there was a terrorist attack in the terminal, the terrs would already be locked and loaded while our NG would have had to load their mags into their rifle and charged the suckers up. Who would have been the winners in that scenario ?

I'm sorry but I don't get the connection between how the police are too militarized and these others. They are federal and militarized, but this is about local police and their actions.

To start with our military is to protect us from both foreign and domestic enemies. Outside and inside the country.

When the NG was used in AZ they also went out to find crosser, they were not allowed to arrest, but they were actively out in the field along side BP and reporting to BP what they sniffed out. Then BP took over and arrested the crossers.
