I didn't do my homework and ordered the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D that everyone raves about. Trouble is that I only have a Nikon D5100 camera and it doesn't auto focus with this camera. It does on the D7100. Did someone say this on UHH? I'm sure they did. I just didn't pay attention. Can I use it anyway? I'm spoiled using AF and don't really want a prime lens that doesn't have it.
So, the bottom line is...
Now, I'm having an attack of GAS because I want a D7100 anyway. and this little "nifty fifty" will AF on the 7100. What's a woman to do?

Your logic is wonderful! Now, you will be shooting more so you need another battery, and the CPL might need to upgraded, and .....

Go for the 7100' then you can use both type of lenses - internal motor driven and in-camera motor driven.

You might be better served with the 35mm 1.8G. Will work great with any DX body that you have. The 50mm 1.8G would be my second choice.

What is a good prime lense for the D5200? The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 also?

There is no such thing as "a good prime for the D5200". The question is, what is "a good prime for custodian". Look at what focal lengths you shoot the most, and where you want a faster lens, to decide which prime would make sense for you. :-)

I have the 35mm. I had heard so much about the 50 that I decided to see what all the raving was about. I will stop the buying and use what I have. Thanks.

People rave about the 50mm f/1.8 because it is a "fast and cheap" lens. That has nothing to do with whether it is a good lens for you. :-)

I have a 35mm and a 105mm macro lens. Love them both.

I would return it and buy 50mm 1.8G. It'll work fine with your D5100.

We are talking about <$100. You can have it all.
