Many excellent systems out there …Both systems you mentioned are great . Hard to tell someone what they should buy . Personal preference based on speaking with people who use them …What is your budget ? Handle both cameras if those are the only two you are considering …people often suggest camera systems they us e ! I shoot both Nikon and Canon...

It depends more on the model than the brand IMO. Suggest looking at Sony and Pentax as well. Read as many reviews as possible. Try to decide what type of photography you will be using it for. If you shoot mainly landscapes as an example, it may be easier to decide than if you are using it, for action in low light, shooting hand-held, and you need a more expensive model with very high ISO capabilities. Too many variables to asess accurately with information of OP.

Someone asked a famous interviewer who he liked better: Pavarotti or Domingo. He replied "We're lucky to have them both."

Your willingness to read, learn, and practice are much more important than the brand of camera you use. If you want a camera for fully automatic, often, but not always correct exposure, get a p&s. If you want to hone your skills and become more than just a competent photographer, get something that will let you go wild with exposure and focusing variations.

My suggestion would be Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Panasonic, and I think there are others. By the way, Sony manufactures the sensors for several major brands of cameras so don't fall for the equipment snobbery that seems to be such a part of the photographic community.

This is going to require some work and research to find what you are comfortable with. And, absolutely, do not get involved in a controversial conversation about the value of certain brands of equipment. It will only bring you down.

Well, according to my tests performed when I bought a Sony the results are as follows:

Canon outperforms Nikon as a boat anchor, but a Nikon will knock a cat off the bird feeder better. (better aerodynamics)
Canon seems to make a nicer splat pattern off an overpass, but Olympus is the absolute best in the field because it will bounce bumper high for a better spread.
Nikon is harder for idiots to remove from their rectum after they quote Ken Rockwell at one of my photo shoots, but if you can get the Canon in there sideways without losing your shoe then its a close call.
Nikon units are easier to saw in half on a meat saw, but that is body only. Results with lenses on are mixed.
Fuji blows them both away on the ordinance test, leaving only a small amount of shrapnel behind.
Nikon gets greater distance from the trebuchet due to better aerodynamics mentioned earlier.

Hope this helps! If you still aren't sure which camera to buy, go to the nearest camera store and ask them which one they recommend.

What, no Pentax, Leica, or Panasonic jokes?! Can't speak for Sony digital, but back in the film days before Sony absorbed Minolta, while in retail I used to recommend Minolta for price vs. value even though I've always been a Pentax user.

I guess you really want a camera recommendation. But is it just me, or am I a really very advanced photographer for knowing not to ask. Especially when you only asked about two of the very many great brands out there. Hell, they are all good, just slightly different. Specific models vary more. On my current want list, Pentax K5IIS or K3.

Go to a store and try and feel all of the cameras till you feel comfortable with one. I use several Canons but Nikon is OK. ( I had a service problem with Nikon) but in the work I guess Nikon is OK. But, you will be using it a long time be comfortable with it in you hands.

I agree, try several. Your Nikon vs. Canon issue is an issue for some. I know a pro who partly uses Canon because they are "nice" to her when she has repair issues and "may" loan her for free a camera or lens when needed. Not probably the case with any other camera company.

The answer to the question is the 1 that has the features you're looking for and you like how it feels in your hands. That's why I shoot a Sony Alpha 850.

In the UK we would write amateur not amature so could it be construed we would write Sony instead of Nikon or Canon?

Sony is still Japanese no matter how you spell it (that is a good thing actually). A UK camera is what? Oh, there once were English (and German) made Kodak cameras.

You aren't going to go wrong with either. As several here have pointed out - it's much more about the user than the equipment. Taking great photos is not just a matter of getting a talented camera - it's a matter of putting in the hard work and sometimes a bit of luck too!

Sorry for the omission; after working a 12 hour overnight shift I fell a little short on the camera bashing. When it stops raining I will drag the trebucet to the top of the overpass along with a bag of ordinance and some Pentax and Panasonic bodies for experimentation. I can't afford Leica gear, but I hear that if you stack enough of them together they make a really strong outhouse! :P
