I hear the D7100 is a fine camera. You will enjoy it very much.

I didn't do my homework and ordered the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D that everyone raves about. Trouble is that I only have a Nikon D5100 camera and it doesn't auto focus with this camera. It does on the D7100. Did someone say this on UHH? I'm sure they did. I just didn't pay attention. Can I use it anyway? I'm spoiled using AF and don't really want a prime lens that doesn't have it.
So, the bottom line is...
Now, I'm having an attack of GAS because I want a D7100 anyway. and this little "nifty fifty" will AF on the 7100. What's a woman to do?

All DSLRs should have an autofocus motor, and no lens should be called autofocus that does not have a motor. Having said that, focusing manually is how it was done for many decades. It's not very difficult, and you will be sure that your subject - and not the thing behind it - is in focus.

Keep the lens and focus manually.

See the listing at B&H - "Autofocus." Slightly deceptive.

Do which ever make more sense to you and your future goals. If, right at present money is an issue, trade the "D" lens in on a "G" lens and have your AF-S type auto- focus now and still have a lens that will be usable when you decide to upgrade, or go ahead and get that D7xxx series camera that will use most any lens that Nikkor has produced in recent memory with either type of auto- focus or even many of the earlier manual focus ones as well.

Go shopping, of course. You have the lens, go buy the camera. And the Nikon kit with 18-55 and 55-300 lenses has a $250 rebate from Nikon; you can get it for $1450 or less. Such a deal.

Manual focusing is easy if you have a split fresnel screen. Some lenses don't even have focus confirmation, that can be a bit touch and go.

Simply use the Nikon 50mm 1.8D as a manual focus lens on the D5100. I have an auto focus Nikon 180mm 2.8 for telephoto shots but my walk around lens is a Nikon 28mm 2.8 manual focus lens. I use the D300. Manual focus is not an issue, at least to me. Each to their own ........

I have the 1.8g and even though you can use it in AF...I always use M focus...works better for me. Just saying...

I loved those screens in the old days. You can still buy them.

If you're looking for a "normal" lens, the 50 is only that on a full frame camera. for a crop sensor like the 5xxx or 7xxx series, the "normal" lens is 35 mm.

It has to do with the field of view. So, depending on what you thought you were getting, you might consider the excellent, but inexpensive 35 1.8 G DX, whichever camera you decide on.

I had a D7000 with the 35, and it is a killer lens, will AF on either body.

Learning curve--what exactly does a fresnel screen do? I just read the first ref site and they are available for t3i's. Why do they make manual focus more accurate? What cameras(or rather photographers??) need them? thanks

I would return it and buy 50mm 1.8G. It'll work fine with your D5100.

AND on your 7100/7200 when you are ready to buy it.

Thank you all for the good information. I will wait for the new version of the D7100 to arrive and control my GAS tendencies for a while. It will be difficult but I can do it.
I will also try to use the manual focus on my 5100. Might as well learn something new that helps me become a better photographer.
(Jerry... that Katzeye focusing screen installation looks scary. I'm not sure I want to do that myself and I would still have to buy the D7100 because they don't make it for the 5100 camera. But thanks for the information.)

I believe it was an old Mack and Meyer film, where they bought a lawn mower, then went looking for a house with a yard so they could use it.
