what you are seeing as white spots and blue shawdowing is typical of chromatic aberation, caused by your lens.
Dropping down a f stop some times helps.

I took this picture along with many, many others while I was in Colorado. It's a picture of my brother carrying his young son across the South Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon. My question is.. what are all those spots? They're all over the rocks, the people, the grass.. they're everywhere. At first I thought it was light reflecting off the water but there are too many. Is this just a severe case of noise?

Do you have a UV filter on your lens? A UV filter can cause colors to appear in specular hi lights. Your also could have a lens that has a coating problem.

Static electricity is real bad in the dry air in CO. Could be it had something to do with this. Could have been affecting the electronics in your camera. Not sayin' for sure but it should be considered.

Well.. looks like there are a number of possibilities. I did not have a UV lens on the camera. I took that pic with a p&s. So that's not the problem. Thank you for all the ideas. Gives me some things to watch for.

Well here goes one more attempt to figure this out....you've got me intrigued with this....could it be the memory card? Maybe you got a bad one? Try switching memory cards and shooting into the sun again, with digital zoom and see what happens. Just a thought. Then go into the Menu and turn OFF digital zoom entirely and reshoot. I'll be here waiting, just scratching my head.....
