I took this picture along with many, many others while I was in Colorado. It's a picture of my brother carrying his young son across the South Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon. My question is.. what are all those spots? They're all over the rocks, the people, the grass.. they're everywhere. At first I thought it was light reflecting off the water but there are too many. Is this just a severe case of noise?

ISO 160, f/5.6, 1/360

It can't be noise at ISO 160. My only guess is spray from the water on your filter/lens.

Nope.. that can't be it. I was zooming in from the bank some distance from the water. This was using my p&s at 26x so I was zoomed all the way but I took several pictures during the 5 or 10 minutes they were in the water and this is the only one that has these dots.

Oops, I stand corrected. I just went back and looked and it appears it is not the only one. It just wasn't as noticeable in the others as it is in this one. Still don't know what it is.

Hey I did a little research,, this may be a possible issue. Sensor dust. Or rather dust on your sensor... Most point n shoots are pretty well sealed from the elements but on occasion if your camera is in a very dusty area with fine dust particles it can enter the camera body. So I ask this question: where ever in an area right before or during that shot when there was heavy pollen or wind? This may or may not be the case for you but it is an attemp to help you figure out what it is.. last question did any pics after those have those spots?

Did you use digital zoom? If so I would say that it's a digital thing. With digital zoom, it digitally crops your picture and tries to fill in pixels that are "missing". That would be my guess, but I really don't know for sure. I recommend not using digital zoom and crop your pictures on your computer.

Sensor dust appears as darker spots, not lighter spots.

Dust was a problem that day due to a dirt/gravel road nearby but those spots appear to be in the photos only during say a 15 or 20 minutes span of time. They are absent before and after. Very strange. Ah.. maybe that's the problem.. I was on digital zoom.

At first I thought this problem may be the rock itself: gneiss or granite, we have lots of that here in Colorado. All the purple tells me that here is a lot of "purple fringing" that you must get rid of first. What's left is probably noise-get rid of that and the image should clear up.

By the way, tell your brother that people drown in that river every year!?

Huh.. I will tell him. Thanks for your input. When I first noticed the spots it was on the rocks my first thought was granite also but then I saw them on his arm. Maybe it is just noise. Sure is alot of it. Thanks again.

May be speculaz highlights. A result of bright light bouncing off the water, which in turn has create a lot of CA issues.

Not really sure which of these possible problems caused the spots but I was on digital zoom so maybe it is just pixels filled in with white. As smart as cameras are these days I'm not sure I understand why it would use white. At least it's not on all my pictures. Come to think of it.. many were in digital zoom without the spots. I don't know... it's a mystery.

Was a sunny day, sunlight was reflecting off leaves and everything else. I love Colorado, lived in Denver and sold sewing machines all over the state and area. Harold bigharry31@gmail.com
