I just bought a 2014 Mazda MX-6 hard top convertible that doesn't come with a spare. Of course there is no room in the trunk for one. Roadside emergency service, country wide, is provided and the can to inflate the tire is included. After driving the car I had to have it, spare or no spare!

No spare is the wave of the future, either roll with it now or you will roll with it later when everyone eliminates the spare. If it is a deal breaker for you, get him to install run flat tires.

Something this inane would never stop me from buying a Honda. To get to the point the first Honda I bought I drove for 250K miles with zero repairs (with the exception of brakes, tires etc.). The second Honda I never plan on replacing. You could buy a GM car and really make a risky move.

How long do you plan on keeping the car? If it is over 5 years check on the cost of the battery replacement. Then decide.

There are several issues with the Hybrid Cars...One is that they are really not all that "Green" when you factor in energy used to charge them...disposal/replacement of the batteries....and other things. Honda does make good vehicles, BUT, the decision to not put a spare tire in the car was a bean counter's decision and not a good one. They designed the car to not have space for a spare, it would have been just as easy to design it to have space for one. Another reason I would not have one of the Hybrids is for safety. I personally know a police officer that was forced to retire, after accidentally inhaling fumes from batteries damaged in a motor vehicle accident....she developed respiratory problems which were quite severe.

When was the last time you had a flat. I bet it has been over 40 years for me. Also for the last 11 years I have been working as a DX Driver, for car dealers, and drive over 75,000 each year.
My personal car is a 2013 Malibu, and has a spare, but I would be happy with a 50 mile blow up kit that they now put in new cars.

Bob,
Go to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/hybridCompare.jsp. I compared the Honda Accord EX Hybrid, although you can choose your specific trim level. When compared to the non-hybrid, it shows that based on 15k miles/year, a difference of $53/month in fuel savings. You can choose your anticipated annual mileage, % city/highway driving, and average fuel price/gallon. The hybrid cost several thousand more and your 'brother-in-law' discount should be about the same percentage on either model unless he's overstocked on a particular model and needs to move some iron.
Jim's Ford C-Max Energi shows much better mileage although it's not shown on the .gov calculator for some reason (only the Fusion hybrid). Of course, you can't buy that in your situation.
It appears that you are looking at the Honda plug-in hybrid so the mileage may be different. There is another, more popular model, the Honda (non-plug-in) hybrid. I'm sure you got the details but here's a short overview from Autotrader.com: http://www.autotrader.com/research/article/car-reviews/218420/2014-honda-accord-hybrid-plug-in-hybrid-new-car-review.jsp
They recommend the non-plug in version although still no spare tire. This is a trend in weight-savings so expect it in more and more vehicles. Good luck!

Get a Toyota. Our Prius gets 50+ regularly, and a friend with a Camray gets 40+ regularly. I don't know about the Avalon, but based on the rest of the line I'm sure it's great, too.

And they have spare tires.

If there would be a family war just because you didn't buy a car from a Brother-in-law....you have definitely married into the wrong family...

A comment on the "Car" discussion.... I own a 1990 Buick Road Master with 298.000 miles on it... I get 26 Miles per gallon gas mileage and I have never had a flat Tire or (other than 3 alternators) a mechanical Problem with the car. Oh, and it has a Full Sized Spare, easily reached in the living room sized Trunk.

It was paid off in 11 months so I have had "COST" free use, other than routine maintenance for, 23 years.

Just in case it blows its engine one of these days, I always have my eye out for similar cars and currently you can buy a nice Buick or Caddy with low milage for $2500 to $3500 dollars. So immediately I have saved $30,000 dollars and have a car that a man my size can actually get in with out yoga like gyrations.

My wife owns a Chrysler Sebring 2001 year... it is a nice car, but a typical Adult man hurts himself every time he tries to get behind the wheel...

Mike

I drive about 20,000 miles a year between my car and my truck. The last two miles to my house are on a gravel road. I frequently go to Milwaukee and Chicago, about 190 and 300 miles away, respectively, and in the last 16 years for sure, and probably more before that, I have never had a flat tire. I don't even know where the spare tire or jack is for my truck, and have no idea where the jack is for my car. So, for me a spare or jack doesn't mean anything. It sure wouldn't be a deal breaker.

How much driving do you do, is that the extra mileage really worth it? My sister is a spend thrift, she purchased a Toyota Prius and got similar gas mileage to the Accord that you are considering, but she hated the car, after 2 years of driving it a light switch clicked in the dark recesses of her mind as she came to realize that she just doesn't drive enough to justify driving a car that she hated and was suffering for maybe a couple of hundred dollars in savings each year..... The next day she traded it in on a new Camry and so far is living happily ever after.

Yes, I have those run flat tires and never understood the advantage, I guess that if you see the light come on and believe it to be true you had better get to a service station.... They came on the vehicle but I never found them to be useful.
