Modern hybrid. Rated at 50+ miles per gallon with good safety rating. Only it does not come with a spare tire (not even a space saver) or a jack. Instead it comes with an emergency inflation kit that is rated to keep you going for 50 miles.

Would you buy this 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid? This kept me from signing the check, and my brother in law (the dealership owner) can't figure it out.

Thanks for your opinions.

Edit: Let me add that there is no place to place a space saver spare except in the main trunk area that is already somewhat smaller due to the batteries.

I have a 2013 Buick Lacrosse. It has the same crappy kit in place of a spare.

Most flats can be dealt with by the "spare in a can" , but, how long are you willing to wait for AAA in the event that it can't? And, knowing the business the way I do, Is your head going to explode when the service truck shows up 2 hours later and the driver says "Well @$&@, nobody told me to pick up a new tire"!!!! And how long will it take that service truck to find and pick up the right size spare? Also, with your personal driving habits how long will it take to justify the up charge for hybrid? Are gas stations plentiful in the areas you drive? Do you absolutely Hate to pump gas? How do insurance and resale values compare? Honda is known for great cars, no doubt, but you do have options. Diesels are also known for great mileage, but they have their challenges, too. Keep us posted and, if you just happen to have a camera, post some pics...Please alert me when you get your new car. Enjoy

You missed one important point. The owner of the dealership is my brother-in-law. Now if I buy a non-Honda you will see fireworks that makes ISIS (ISIL) look like pikers. My answer is to purchase nothing at this time. My hope is that Honda will get enough calls to make them see the error of their ways.

I'm just going to avoid buying a new car now. It was for my wife anyway, as a suprise gift. What she doesn't know won't hurt too much.

I'll just wait a couple of years and see what shakes out. My little CR-V is going great, and it has a spare!

I've had a flat that would render spare in a can useless. A steel beer can (Aussie I think) clipped the sidewall of my right rear tire, it left a 3" gash. There ain't no way spare in a can would fix that long enough for me to go 50 feet. Happened in Denver, CO in 1978 on the way to church Easter Sunday morning.

And this is the possibility they refuse to see. How long do you think you would last on the south side of Chicago waiting for a tow truck?

Thinking of Jim Croce's song "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown". I might wind up looking like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone. I'm driving a Subaru Forester with a donut spare. We're talking about a cross country trip in the near future. My commented about seeing if we could get a full size spare and would it fit in the well.

I've had many flats and I can't remember any that could be fixed with 'Spare in a Can.' The only fix is a new tire. My car has that hateful 'Save Space Spare' also. So you have a flat and have to change it to the save space thing. Then drive to the store and buy a tire and have them put it on. Because virtually all the flats I've had happen to far away from home to drive there and then take care of it. My point, just have the right tire and change it once and be done. Go buy another spare and replace the one your using.

I'm not a tree hugger, but one of our cars in addition to the large SUV is a Prius. It really is the perfect city car for short distances and errands. It has a spare that will get you down the road, but it is somewhat smaller and with treads that won'l allow you to go very fast without producing a whole bunch of vibration. Many of the newer cars don't come with spare tires anymore either as they have "run flat" tires that are supposed t to be good enough to get you to a tire shop. I'll still still with my spare, even no matter how small.

If you maintain your car you reduce the chance of a flat tire. I have had only 1 in the last 200,000 miles of driving. I will trust to AAA or the equivalent. Do you have a spare fan belt that you take with you? Fan belts break. Starter motors and batteries also fail.

I would prefer a spare tire but my Ford C-Max Energi is averaging 102 mpg over the 4000 miles I have driven since March 31 when I bought it. Pretty good return against the risk of a flat. Yes, it does take electricity to charge it but it takes about $0.46 per day.

I would not buy a Honda Accord Hybrid period, tire or no tire. If you want a Hybrid the Toyota Avalon is among the best values in cars. It is a bigger car, a better car and a better Hybrid system than Honda. They are so reliable that the taxi companies in New York City Swear by them.
