I will check them out. Thanks. I especially appreciate suggestions of cameras that work well but will leave me with all appendages intact.

Fan, this is not an alternative, as it's a DSLR, but it's a VERY small DSLR.
The Canon SL-1 with STM lenses, can be quite compact and the viewfinder fits your requirements. Good luck.

Hi--

Due to health issues, I'm looking for a camera that I can actually use -- one with, say, a 1" sensor, a variable length lens, a decent minimum aperture, and (here's the deal breaker, I'm afraid) a viewfinder that permits clear focusing and visualizing of depth of field in manual (either an optical viewfinder or a good lcd that swivels to avoid glare.)

Any ideas?

Rog

Nikon 1 V3 has all you are asking for, 1 inch sensor, good selection of lenses, good electronic viewfinder plus a very good autofocus and compact size.

I have a Canon G12 as a back - up to the back - up. (Don't tell anyone) It's getting on in years, but you can still pick them up on the s/hand market. As far as I'm concerned, cameras have viewfinders, and this fits the bill. Gives good results, fits in the pocket, shoots RAW, and won't break the bank. Not a super zoom, but good enough for most.

Canon SX260, small size and has manual settings like a DSLR . I own a Canon Rebel SL1 (supposed to be the smallest DSLR made), it can get weighty with the external flash, still not as heavy as some of the others.

Look at Fuji cameras. The X-E2 or the X-T1. Both cameras are mirror less and you can change lenses. They have the same size sensor as the Nikon 7100. Yes and they have viewfinders You can also look at the X100s with a fixed lens. I switched to the X-E2 because of the weight of a DSLR.

Welcome to UHH. The Canon SX50 would be an excellent choice. It is lite weight for what it is and has a lot of good features if it's not physically too big for you.

Sony NEX 6. Check them out at Amazon.com. Only 499.00.

I love mine! Get a full APC size sensor (Nikon size, not Canon). Beautiful view finder. Check it out.

It does look interesting:

I had a Panasonic GX1 -same size sensor- for a while and the image quality was very impressive (For what it's worth, I shoot most of my pro work with a Nikon D800).

Lots of folks here rave about the Canon SX50 - so much so that I just bought one for my daughter as a starter camera.

I also have a Canon SX50 for the loooonng shots. Both the NEX 6 and Canon have:

Electronic VF - Sony better
RAW file capability
External flash hot shoe (Sony better)
Sony has interchangeable lens - growing collection.

Moon shot was hand-held in front yard with SX50

Hand held with SX50
Hand held with SX50...
