I have not read many of the replies to this post, but I do think the hard cup of most such books is preferable. For the Northrup book, however, Amazon gave me free Kindle version when I bought the hardback. Northrop has done this one the way I wish other publishers would. He has promised periodic updates of the digital version forever and has built in videos that are helpful.

Kindle!

RUN the book on your second PC monitor while ACTIVELY following the the lesson in the program on your primary monitor.

Stop READING the book!

Hard cups are beneficial, that's for sure. My books are of both varieties. Kindles and iPads are especially handy for being the one place to keep pristine copies of all equipment manuals.

Books! They're easy to grab off the shelf for quick reference--Kindle, not so much.

I read Kindle books for certain uses. Philosophy, Theology, Psychology, etc., but for technical and how-to where I'm going to read, then do, Kindle just doesn't work for me. Real books can be propped open on the desk and followed step-by-step in a way that Kindle can't (Or I'm not smart enough) YMMV

I am going to order the following:

Tony Northrup's DSLR Book: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography

The Art of Photography: An Approach to Personal Expression

Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera

All based on some searching on books worthy of reading.

My question is "in your opinion" should I get them as books or in a kindle version. Note the kindle we have is the basic one. I suppose I could download it for my SO's LG tablet.

My sense is reading novels, the kindle is great, however for books like these it is much better if they are in book form.

So what say yea.

I have and use a Kindle software on my iPad. It is difficult to use when reading these type of books because the pagination is changed. Where the hard copy pages are laid out (usually) to allow viewing an image and the text referring to it on the same page spread, the Kindle version will have you jumping all over the place.

For my use, if it is learning type reading that I will/may be referring to while at the processing console, I always buy the hard copy.

My $0.02

These books do not do well on the basic Kindle but on the Kindle Fire they work nicely. I have Tony Northrup's DSLR Book on both kindles and do not like the standard version at all.

These books will go nicely on tablets as well. I have the same book on my Samsung Tablet and have enjoyed it more on that device.

The gentleman who can't find page he wants on a kindle should read the instructions. It's easier by far to search via index or topic and I bookmark and highlite all important stuff. That is the main advantage over paper in my opinion

I buy either epubs or pdf's for my iPad. Nice to have the book open on the iPad when I'm working. For instance, I keep the Scott Kelby LR5 book open on the iPad while I'm working my images in LR. I have a stand for the iPad, which keeps it at the right angle, right next to my computer's screen.

Besides, I have th best of my photography books and manuals on the ipad. Seems to be a LOT easier to fit the iPad into my camera backpack, as opposed to stuffing a bunch of hard cover books in there.

As to finding things in a book, if you familiarize yourself with the search features, index and so on, you can get to any part of a book with a tap or two.

I used to have ten or twelve shelves full of books of all sorts. Got the digitals, got rid of the shelves and hard copies, and all these books I'll ever read are on my computer, ready to transfer to the iPad as needed. I can add two dozen books to the iPad and the weight increases not a whit.

You can bookmark pages easily. Also, you can download the Kindle application to your iPad and I have also downloaded the Kindle application to my MacBook Pro. I do use Kindle on the Kindle HD as well. I don't use it on my iPhone although I have the application. I have over 900 books on my Kindle account and I don't have any problems finding what I need or want.

IMO the hard copy is best. It's too hard to flip back and forth with the Kindle and I can never find the page I want to go back to.

There's an app for that (no, really).

Yep. The ability to highlight a section, a sentence or a word of text, in the color of your choice, even to copy same, is a part of Apple's IOS. Can't speak for the tabletuary step-children, but I'd think that Android, at least can do that.

The only books I get on Kindle are novels and other "word only" books. Anything with illustrations or photos I get hard copy. Books like camera manuals I have a hard copy and a Kindle copy for when I travel.

I like flipping pages (hard to do on Kindle); I like being able to see captions under the picture (without formatting errors); I like to take in the whole photo in its original size (also not likely on Kindle).

If you have a non-color Kindle version, it's a no brainer./

I use a small stand, manufactured by Luxa, in a finish similar to that of my iMac, which holds the iPad at the proper angle. Makes it quite convenient. Bought this stand for my 1st generation iPad, loved it, and it still works =just as well for my iPad Air. The way this stand is built, I'd think it would hold just about any tablet you'd throw at it. And with this stand, I don't have to worry about the items used to prop up a hard-cover book slipping or sliding or falling off the desk.
