I am going to order the following:

Tony Northrup's DSLR Book: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography

The Art of Photography: An Approach to Personal Expression

Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera

All based on some searching on books worthy of reading.

My question is "in your opinion" should I get them as books or in a kindle version. Note the kindle we have is the basic one. I suppose I could download it for my SO's LG tablet.

My sense is reading novels, the kindle is great, however for books like these it is much better if they are in book form.

So what say yea.

Willie

Books! They're easy to grab off the shelf for quick reference--Kindle, not so much.

While I keep my camera's manual on my tablet, simply because I can then search by keyword, even when away from home, I very much like the printed books, both the camera's (and other) manuals, and books of the type you describe. Mostly because I like to read this kind of book with pen and highlighter in hand.
Have you ever noticed how a highlighter messes up your tablet or e-reader screen?

I agree and would buy the hard copy. My experience is you can view the photo being talked about while reading the text. Often on a tablet the photo is not on the screen with the text talking about it so you have to scroll from text to photo and then back to text to continue reading. ;)

Agree, the "real book" is much better for a reference!

Kindle's run out of battery, may break down - books will always be there - I find that the book is much easier to reference.

I recently became a "fan" of Kindle reading.
When I buy a book, I can put it on my phone, I can put it on my hand-me-down IPad, and I can put it on the wife's IPad.
And since I own it in my Kindle library I can re-download it anytime.
I did put a large SD card (miniature) in my smarter-than-me phone, so it has 80 gigs of storage. (Android type).

But the point is: With the Kindle version, I can have my library served up several ways. And it is always with me.
(Except in the shower. No, I don't take my phone in the shower...)

Physical books tend to stay on the shelf. (They don't behave well in the shower either.)

I use my Kindle extensively. That said, if you want to view photo examples and read text at same time, I struggle with that unless I turn it horizontal.
Go hard cover if you intend to use as reference manuals, Kindle if just reading for education.

I know this sounds crazy but, I have 2 Kindles and 2 iPads that I always carry with me (in my man bag). I never use the Kindle app on my iPhone. I have most of my photography books in Kindle format and I have quite a few paper books. Some paper books I take to Staples and have them ring bound so they lay flat. I don't carry my paper books but I keep them near my work station.

For this book in particular, the Kindle and Kindle apps on laptops, tablets and computers is the only way to go. Since I've owned this book, he has updated it for free and each chapter has at least one private youtube video tutorial where he shows you how to do what he has discussed in the book. I learned a lot of my fundamentals from this book and I don't think a hard copy would be nearly as effective. My 2 cents...

Or you could go with both, Kindle is around $10, paper is around $20. Problem solved...

I use my kindle for reading books all the time, it now feels strange to hold a paper book. however like you i have a bsic kindle, not the colour all singing all dancing one and i have bought photography books for it. I find that on the basic kindle i cannot see the photographs diagrams etc properly, one reason being that they are black and white. So if the author is showing you something via photos then it is a waste of time. I can view them on my computer too which is better but if it is not in the kindle then i prefer a book.

IMO the hard copy is best. It's too hard to flip back and forth with the Kindle and I can never find the page I want to go back to.
