I'a T3i owner and use a Tamron 18 - 270mm zoom. Refurb body and lens should be under your budget. But huge range of photo resources!

This should be a great kit for you. The T3i, is a excellent camera for a beginner. The Tamron 18-270mm VC USM lens will give you all you need for now. You will not have to change lenses mid shoot. The Tamron lens will be warrantied for 6 years, new. The photos will be great quality, but not stellar, you'll need "L" quality lenses for that. All in all, the weight will be easily hand held, and with Tamron's VC (vibration control) you shots will be steady. If you buy the T3i and Tamron 18-270 you'll be under budget, and be able to get a spare battery. (important extra, digital cameras eat batteries)

I jusr up graded, went with the new Canon SL1, with a 18-55 lens. It is still a Rebel, but high end Rebel above, so I have been told, the Ti5. $699.49, AFTER state sales tax. Extremely light weight, and a major increase over my 5 yr old xsi. My old lenses fit. Lovd it!

Good luck.

Hi Brewerton,

In San Diego, formerly lived in Syracuse! I am in the same boat but have been checking out the Nikon D5300. Read great reviews and also like the wifi feature and 24MP. Have you checked it out?

I have been wanting to upgrade from my point and shoot sony h2. Dang thing almost hit the wall several times but made it since 2007. I would try to take the picture and nothing but beeping from the camera. We'll anyways I've been looking at the t5i as my upgrade. I research day and night but I am having a hard time deciding on what package to go for. Max budget would be 1000. I shoot lots of family pics with our two boys but love to take scenic pics.

I am stuck between these three options to start my journey:

1. 18-55 and 55-250 STM $949
2. 18-135 STM $949
3. 18-55 and 50 1.8 $875 and get a good zoom later.

I just have to jump and get this in the mail so I can sleep again and not stay up all night watching YouTube and reading reviews...:). I am going to take a class once I get the thing to use it correctly.

Thanks for any advise/suggestions you guys have. What a great forum for those of us just starting out. Thank you.
David

Last May 5 days before we left for our 2+ month trip I received your #1 from Amazon. I'm still learning how to use it even though I've taken around 3,000 pictures with it. Some are great IMHO but some need to be done away with. I truly love my t5i. There were times that I wished that I had a lens that was a mix of the 2 lenses that came with the camera. Even though I'm new to this I think I got some nice shots. Maybe I'll look into another lens later. We just got back home today.

Before you buy anything else, check the Tamron 18-270mm zoom. I bought one on e-bay in June, took it with me to Korea, with good results.

Let us know what you choose, and I hope it works out well.

It might also let us know how useful our advice is, at least for those of us that care! :-)

Cheers

I'm also using a Tamron 18-270 with a Rebel, and I like not having to change lenses when my scene previously had gone from just-barely lens #1 to just-barely lens #2.

So I am understanding that refurbished might be a good option?
