Photoshop is the gold standard. And the most demanding in cost and learning. If you are making a long-term commitment to digital, you may as well start now. Many of the free on-line tutorials are a tremendous help.

It has a nifty tool called Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, which handles so much of your first-line tweaking. ACR, along with Adobe Bridge, probably obviate the need for Lightroom and Elements. I do not know if ACR and Bridge come with the standalone version of PS.

However, if this is too much to swallow, then use another program and do not feel guilty. PS may not be for you now or ever. You can always change later but enjoy your choice now.

I do not currently have any photo editing software and I am thinking of purchasing Photo Shop but am very confused what part to purchase. Do i purchase the original and then have to add elements to it. Or do i just purchase the elements that i like. Any info would be greatly appreciated as they are all very expensive and I cannot afford to buy things that I don't need.
Thank You,
Tracey

I personally use Phtoshop CS5 which is for photography and graphic arts, but it is very expensive ($695). All you need is Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 which has many of the same features as Photoshop CS5 plus it has an excellent organizer as well. It is on sale today at Staples for $59.95.

Also there is a wonderful plugin for Photoshop and some other that does a good job of removing power lines. Be sure to read the installation file. I have used it many time and love it.

Tracy, go to this link and download the 30 day trial of Photoshop Elements 10. You can then see if it offers everything that you need. There is no obligation to buy it if you do not think it will do the job.

GIMP is on par with PS no harder to learn (but different) it is FREE and all of the plug-ins are FREE, not inexpensive but FREE!!! There is a misunderstanding that it runs only on Linux but it, like most open source apps run multi-platform on Windows, Linux and Macs.
