Originally I had the same problem. Then took a Kelby class on Lightroom and bought a Nat Coalson book on LR and have not looked back Do not try to learn everything at one start with the Library Module the go to the Develop module etc
How does one take a Kelby class?
Are there any online workshops?

I am in the same boat. I have not found Lightroom to be very user-friendly.
Lightroom is a very powerful program and can be daunting to someone starting out. Once you get to understand the interface, you will never go back.
There is plenty of help out there both in video format and in books.
In books, Martin Evening and Scott Kelby have some good ones.
In Video, the Adobe website has some very good ones by J Kost that are free. at reasonable cost, George Jardine has some very good ones at
http://mulita.com/blog/?page_id=2There are many available on youtube also.
One thing that I might suggest is that you spend some time initially learning about the Library Module and LRs Cataloging system before you get too deeply involved. This will save you from some problems down the road. But don't worry, if you have a filing system already set up, you will be able to continue to use it in LR.
Do check out the Post Processing section here on UHH. It is a great place to ask questions.

Go on abebooks.com and get a used copy of Scott Kelby's book delivered for $3.67. No kidding.

Jeff Schewe's book
The Digital Negative gives extensive coverage of LR.
A gent presented the second part of a very nice tutorial on LR at our club last night. Afterwards, the topic of resources came up. One of the most respected, talented and experienced members recommended Coalsen's book as the best primer for beginners, the Evening's book as the encyclopedia. For online tutorials, he recommended Adobe's Juliette Kost (who doesn't?) and Lynda.com. But it's all up to how each of us learn most efficiently and effectively as well as personal preference.
Tim Grey has a couple of excellent videos on LR 5. He did them at B & H. They are each about 2 hours long but, for me, it was well worth the time. I just moved from Aoerture to LR and now realize I should have done it long ago. Try this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSwkDC3q7uk
When in LR 5, go to click on HELP, then lightroom help. There are many LR training videos right there, free. Good place to start.
I've bought all the books and watched all the free YouTube videos. I subscribed to KelbyOne.com and Lynda.com. Far and away, Jan Kabili on Lynda.com has the very best tutorial on LightRoom 5 for beginners. She has helped me more than any of the others, except for our own "Searcher".

LR isn't very difficult but there is a process in learning it. The Scott Kelby book is a great place to start. Go at your on pace and follow the book. You'll get it.
IS "Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom is good??}

I found Adobe's Lightroom videos too difficult to follow.
Someone on UHH recommended Phil Steele's video course and it's brilliant. I thoroughly recommend it. Just do a Google search. He explains everything very clearly.
