Just got some bad news from Canon: my SX50 is not repairable. LCD stopped working; might be "imaging center" issue, but not something they would attempt to fix as would cost more than camera is worth.

And since it died 8 weeks after warranty expired, they will not honor.

They will sell me a refurbished SX50 for $300 - and that was only after I asked what is best they could do when I called them after receiving an email "offer" of $368. I said no thanks.

I told them I have owned 2 Canon DSLR's and have touted the SX50 on ugly hedgehog for a year, and probably 30 people have bought them because of me. Unfortunately, that didn't matter :-(

I admit I told friends a few months ago that even if my SX50 "died today," I'd feel I had gotten my money's worth because of the awesome opportunities and experiences I've had with it.

Bee7474 suggested purchasing a year's added warranty with next bridge camera. Since I shot 58,000 photos in just under 14 months, I'm thinking that wouldn't be a bad idea.

SO sorry to hear about the loss of your SX50. I too have one but it has not been used very much since I purchased it new. Counter says 570 shots taken. I would consider parting with it since I also have a Canon 7D which was my main camera until I purchased a new Sony a7R. I think that is going to be my main camera now. Considering buying the adapter for A mount and get a Sony G lens telephoto zoom for it.This sony is my 1st full frame camera and I am impressed with it so far. I can post some pictures that I can take with the SX50 so you know that it functions like new and I believe I still have the box it came in. In fact I keep all the boxes my camera gear comes in.
I will post my email address in my profile if interested. I am thinking of maybe $225 and you pay the shipping

Linda, Just in case you decide not to wait for the SX60, joannemci says she just bought a new SX50 from Fred Meyer in Portland for $248!!! ....... Coot

Hi Linda - Fred Meyer in Portland, OR has a Canon SX50HS for $266. They are holding it for 24 hours if you are interested in buying it. I'd be happy to ship it to you and you could pay over the phone with your credit card. I just bought one myself on Monday and I think I'm going to love this camera.

And thanks, Coot, for sharing this "find" with Linda.

Hi Linda - I'm Joanne from Portland that Coot mentioned in a follow-up post. I've located a brand new SX50 HS for $266 (Fred Meyer, Portland, OR) and it's on hold for 24 hours if you're interested. I can ship it to you and you can pay the store with your credit card. No tax in Oregon. Let me know if you're interested.

What a kind offer. It is responses such as this that makes a forum such as this worth the effort despite some of the puerile negativity that is sometimes expressed.

There is hope for humanity yet. Even prickly photographers!

I have a sx50 and i went out and bought a Nikon p600 with a 60x zoom and it really feels good in my hands. You might want to go put the Nikon p600 in your hands and see how it feels. Shame on Canon

So, the p600 took sharper pictures than the sx50, less doctoring up the pics and more time to take pics

Read the above comparison. The Canon comes out miles ahead of the Nikon.

I don't have to read anything, i can look at my pictures from both cameras and see the difference, no article is going to change my mind when i can see the pictures first hand. All i am saying is, my Nikon p600 takes a clearer, sharper picture than my Canon sx50.

I would not complain, at least not formally, if I got 56000 pictures, or so, out of a $350 camera within the stated warranty period. Many people have been singing the praises for the sx50.
Sorry Linda, no really, bite the bullet and buy a new one. Mourning is good but only three days. I will shed a tear with you but it is best to just buy a new one and start a new batch.
I pledge 1 kg of sympathy and you should accept the generous offer of $1 from each hogger that bought that camera because of your input.
Come one hoggers send the lady a buck.

How about the unbridled madness so much in evidence. It is invigorating and sometimes informative. No? Welcome fair lady.
