I understand Ansel Adams was as much an genius in the darkroom as behind the camera.

Some of his most famous shots are impossible without substantial dark room work.

Cropping is an excellent creative method. Even when we were developing in a darkroom cropping was done via the enlarger. Yes, professional photographers crop quite often. The attached was shot using a Canon EF100mm 2.8 Macro with a tripod, but it was also cropped for maximum effect.

The writer had the correct spelling. The plural of "lens" is lenses. While this forum is not for spelling but for photography, I will point out that you might learn to read closer.

Prior to the 60's press photogs used 4x5s with a wide angle lens. Period. The production images were all cropped out of those negatives. Some of them were pretty good...

Back in the 40's and 50's, when I was a news photog, I often could not get close enough to the action, so cropping was a necessity. The large 4x5 negative was, of course, a great help.

We are not asking people to be writers, and if you go an check it out, the word lense is also being reported as correct in some dictionary's. I care less what he writes I want to see what he creates in a camera.

I am as carefull as I can be when I shoot my pic, so I dont have to crop , But saying that still requires me to crop somthing on every pic I shoot. Using a tri pod is very helpfull to avoid croping. camera adjustments are easier on a tripod . Simply because I bracket all my photos. and dont change my focus points.Thats just my way.

Mike,

I'll take a shot at your Q; but take it with a grain of salt. I think that cropping tends to be disfavored not because it's inherently wrong but because consistently having to do a lot of cropping is considered, by some at least, as a marker, a practice, that is inconsistent with a high level of skill. However, I suspect that no-cropping advocacy likely comes more from those who are shooting in environments where they have greater control. Throw in the necessity to frame quickly, throw in environments where your control of the situation is minimal or altogether absent, and the notion of no-cropping becomes less viable. (Note George H's comment above.) So some croping will inevitably be needed on some shots even by the very best. If you're shooting in a studio where you're controlling all the relevant factors and you're still cropping a lot, that might become problemmatic. Otherwise, go boldly into post processing and crop to your standards.
