Lightroom 5 purchase?

Hi all,
I want to buy a PP program. From what I've read here, (and it makes sense to me) is pick one, stay with it and learn it. I've seen reference to posts on Lightroom for a monthly fee of $10. I'm not interested in a monthly fee at this point in time, I'd rather just pay for the program, and be done. However, since I am new, am I missing something? I Googled Lightroom, and can get version 5 for $135 at Amazon. I guess what I'm asking is what are the advantages of the $10 a month fee, compared to buying Lightroom 5? (from a novice standpoint)
As always all feedback greatly appreciated!
Andy

I think from a novice standpoint that buying is better at first. If it works for you then when it come time to update then go to the cloud. Lightroom works better when it is used in conjunction with another program that is an editing program as lightroom is more organizational.

The advantages to that are, that you're getting the full version of photoshop as well and also all future upgrades are included "free of charge"!

For $10 a month you get Lightroom and Photoshop. Good value for sure. And they are always updated when available.

Thank you for your reply,
(Remember this is coming from a novice) Why do I need both? Seems Adobe is hogging the market? They sell both LR and PS, and you need both to properly do PP? From a newbie point of view can you see where I'm coming from?

Give this a read. Might be over your head right now. It will all make sense soon enough.

Thank you! Starting to understand! Still leaning toward Lightroom, but also starting to understand the need for both.
Thank you again for the great link!

Andy, Photoshop CC 2014 and LightRoom 5.5 for $10.00 a month is a great value. It isn't that they are hogging the market as much as they are the very best at what they do. Good luck.

I will mention this in case you are not aware of it. If you are a student or faculty/staff member at an educational institution, you can purchase LR-5 at a discount. Around $74 rather than $135. You will need an email address that ends in ".edu" to take advantage of the discount.

Best,

I'd buy it. I paid $69.00 at Amazon a few months ago for a full version of it. $135.00 is a bit pricy for it.

Lightroom 5 can be used for probably 90-95% of all your post processing needs. Photoshop is usually used for the other 10%, but IMHO, is not necessary. You can use LR 5 to import your photos, organize your photos, perform PP adjustments (ie: especially if you shoot in RAW), and then export your photos to either an online site and/or onto your hard drive for transferring or printing the photos. I absolutely love it!!

If you are only going to have one program I suggest you consider Photoshop Elements 12. It does everything you can do with Lightroom plus it enables you do much more in editing by using layers. If you can wait it goes on sale from time to time at Costco and elsewhere for $49.

If you later go to Lightroom it works seamlessly with Photoshop Elements. Lightroom would then become your mainstay for maybe 90% of your editing. But Elements' Editor will still be available when you need layers. Elements includes an Organizer module that is as, IMHO, as good or better than the cataloging feature in Lightroom. It includes Adobe Camera RAW, which matches the basic editing provided in Lightroom for your RAW images.

IMHO unless you shoot RAW, Elements is a much better buy. The downside is that since it has many more features it is harder to learn. Get Scott Kelby's book on it to save yourself a huge learning curve.

The big advantage of Lightroom for shooting RAW is the simple application of Presets. But that's another topic.

Dennis,
How do I take advantage of this offer? My wife works for Pitt, I work for the local hospital, both our emails end in edu.
Thanks so much for the tip!!

Thanks David,
what I'm worried about is the learning curve. I'm seeing 2 programs, and thinking twice the learning curve? Is Photoshop CC a plugin for Lightroom, or a seperate program?

You don't need both.

Get the Lightroom....live with it for a year and see if you need more.

When you figure out that you need Photoshop...then go for it....but for now...it makes no sense.
