I forgot to add that I must be very fortunate with my EF 24-105 f4L is, as well. I wouldn't trade this for anything as a walk round lens - and certainly not the 24-70 ;-)
I spent four weeks in Australia and Tasmania with this lens on a 7D and although I had to shoot quite a few panoramas to make up for the limited wide angle with the crop sensor I never had to take the lens off and switch to the EF 70-200 referred to in my previous post.
Here's a 25% crop from a shot in Tasmania with the 24-105 on the 7D.
It's worth adding that both of these f4 lenses are light (relatively) as well as optically excellent. Much easier to carry around than the f2.8 lenses are. Oh yes -they're cheaper as well ;-)

This is simple -IF - you have the 70-200 2.8 II and do not mind carrying the weight - get a Tamron SP 2X and put behind it ! ! - your "problem" is solved ...... I can show you a sample if you want ....For good ergonomics you will also want to be on a monopod ...

If you want to travel light and not go beyond 300mm - I recommend the Tamron SP 70-300 VC.

Is there a prime 300mm lens that is not Canon that compares to the Canon 300mm, like Sigma or Tamron?

No, but 300 primes do exist but do not compare to the Canon ....however, - the Sigma 100-300 F4 does - but no OS/IS. .... The Canon 300 non IS is thought to be sharper than the IS version.

On a 7D, the 24-105 is ideal, due to the crop sensor. Different strokes for different folks!

Do you have any experience with the 300mm L f/4?It's the same rim size (77mm) so I can use the same filters I use for my 24-70 and 70-200.

I use this lens. Check my posts. It works well with a 1.4 as well as a 2x Canon extender.

Trying to decide whether to keep my 24-105 or sell it. It's a great walk around lens and I was using it a lot until I got my 24-70. Now I haven't used my 105 for several months.

I want to get a 100-300 because I don't have a long lens for, well, long shots. Right now my 105 is a boat anchor. I guess it's a good back up.

My 24-105L is always close at hand if not attached to my 5D3.
I would be lost without it.

The picture below was captured with this lens and IMO did an excellent job?

Not just for crop sensors and not different folks.
It's also ideal on the full frame 6D I have now. In fact this is one of the 'kit' lenses for the full frame cameras - and deservedly so!

gemlenz,

This thread has now gone all over the place. Can you please tell me what exactly is it you are looking for?

Swamp Gator has shown what a Canon 300 f4 with a Canon 1.4 extender on a 7D can and will do. He proves it almost daily. The Canon 100-400mm lens is, or can be, an excellent lens for wildlife also. The Canon 400mm f5.6 is also an excellent lens and will handle the Tamron 1.4X TC well, giving you a 560mm lens.

If you want something else longer the Sigma 500mm lens with the Tamron 1.4X TC, giving you a 700mm lens, works well. It can also be used with a 2X TC. This has become one of my personal favorite lenses.

Which lens you would chose depends partly on what do you want to do. Bringing me back to my question,

Can you please tell me what exactly is it you are looking for?

Right now I have the 70-200 f/2.8. I'd like to get a little more distance capability for nature shots. I had a 100-400 but didn't like it. I've have a 100-300 f/4.5 which was ok, but I would prefer a L type lens. I' not opposed to off brand lens as lon as it can deliver.
