Just want to say a couple things for those following this thread - the 24-70 II is in a different league from the 24-105 ! The 24-105 is a very good lens - especially for the money but the 24-70 is the best in it's range - made by anybody ! - same for the 70-200 II ! Below is an image using the 70-200 II with Tamron SP 2X from monopod @ 400mm and F8. do the download...

Right now I have the 70-200 f/2.8. I'd like to get a little more distance capability for nature shots. I had a 100-400 but didn't like it. I've have a 100-300 f/4.5 which was ok, but I would prefer a L type lens. I' not opposed to off brand lens as lon as it can deliver.

Earlier I suggested you look at the Tamron SP 150-600. You have not mentioned if you even consider it. But, you constantly rant you want more reach, what more "reach" can you ask for with a lens that will give you consistently good images at 600mm for only $1069.00. If your pocket is so full of money, why not go for the Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM, it is only about $13,000.00. If you would take a look at some of the Canon shooter's shots on this forum you would know what success they have had with the Tamron SP 150-600. But, if your such a Canon purist, be prepared to spend some money.

Trying to decide whether to keep my 24-105 or sell it. It's a great walk around lens and I was using it a lot until I got my 24-70. Now I haven't used my 105 for several months.

I want to get a 100-300 because I don't have a long lens for, well, long shots. Right now my 105 is a boat anchor. I guess it's a good back up.

I am somewhat in the same boat. Couldn't wait to get that 24-105 and it is a fine lens if not a great lens. Only L lens I have. I find myself going back to the 18-200mm though because of the 18 and of course the 200. Just better for a walk around and tack sharp when concentrating on keeping it steady.

Some pride in ownership for that 24-105 L so it will be used but mostly indoors. I also did get the 24-105 for future upgrade to FF but just don't see the need v/s cost right now.

Your situation illustrated the one of the biggest problems with the "always buy full frame lenses" meme. It can be the wrong decision for wide/ultra wide angle lenses and all-in-one/walk around lenses. And if the 24-105mm f/4L II comes out before you get a full frame camera, the situation is even worse.

If you are singing the praises for Nikon you can count me out. I will stick to Canon. If I buy a FF canon that would not mean that I trade my 60D.

I did not mention Nikon, that has nothing to do with this.

The "always buy full frame" meme does not have brand boundaries, people say that to owners of Canon and Nikon APS-C cameras. I was just saying that buying a EF/FX lens for use as an all-in-one or ultra wide angle on an APS-C camera does not really work. This was following your statement, "I find myself going back to the 18-200mm though because of the 18 and of course the 200. Just better for a walk around."

amehta I agree : it is no use me buying a full frame len's . I never enlarged bigger than 8x10 so full frame would be a total waste of cash . to get the best out of full frame you have to be making prints at least 40x26 or bigger , or the crop crap , I would venture a guess that 75-80 percent of the people on the hog that have full frame don't need it for what there doing . there is only a few here that really know what to do with it , but most are snapping happly away with a d800 or d600 and loving it . little do the realize that there pictures are no different than what they were getting with DX . I know there is
people here that know what full frame entails and how to get the most out of it . but the for the majority that want FF because it's the flavor of the day are only fooling them selves . buy a good qualty DX and good qualty lenses and
never look back . you will be further ahead . and most of all you will thank me
for talking you out of FF . the ones who really want it know what there doing
and what it takes in len's printers , bigger computers , storage etc . I could get one tomorrow . but for what I do and most do it's just not feasible .
