Michelle Obama did a great job at raising awareness of the hundreds of girls kidnapped by terrorists in Africa. She lent credibility and awareness to #BringOutGirlsBack the twitter hashtag devoted to making the world be informed about their terrible plight.
But where is Michelle Obama on another human rights victim someone of interest to pro-life advocates and Christians around the world?
meriamThe First Lady has been silent on the plight of Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman sentenced to death in Sudan for rejecting Islam who is being shackled by Sudanese officials despite the fact she is eight-months pregnant. The Islamic court is waiting until Meriam Ibrahim, 26, gives birth before carrying out the sentence but she is reportedly held in chains until then.
SIGN THE PETITION! Save Meriam Ibrahim, Dont Hang her to Death for Her Faith
Writing at The Federalist, Leslie Loftis takes Obama to task for her silence when it comes to Meriam.
It is easy to ignore the religious motivation for the girls kidnapping under the horrible drama of the actual event. But Meriam is in shackles in Sudan because she is a Christian. A Sudanese court has found her guilty of 1) adultery, for having sex with her husbandshe is married to a Christian but since her absent father was Muslim, the court considers her a Muslim and therefore does not recognize the union, and 2) apostasy, refusal to renounce her Christian faith. For the adultery, she received a sentence of 100 lashes, stayed until she gives birth sometime in early June.
For the apostasy, she was sentenced to death, stayed until her baby turns two. (That turns the breast-is-best wars on its head. Breastfeeding is important enough to stay the execution, but the mother/child relationship is not enough for mercy? Ponder the attitudes toward women packed in that delay; they are plenty, but still not enough to overshadow the religious nature of this injustice.) And the reason her toddler is in the cell with her, the court also considers him Muslim based upon his maternal grandfather, therefore his Christian father is an unacceptable caregiver.
For Christian persecution, the US State Department, even at the behest of New Hampshires Senators, can hardly even muster a delayed and infamous-as-it-is-ineffective sternly worded letter. There is comparatively little press coverage. Not even a hashtag campaign.
What first lady ever got into policy before? For one person, really? This woman knew what could possibly happen.
Seems the Muslims have the same opinions as Republicans about children, protect the child while it's in the womb, then the hell with it.

In reading this thread, I didn't perceive any partisan politics, but now that you've brought it up, dljen, apparently Muslim opinions on childbirth are different that Democrats, who don't wait till the child is out of the womb...to hell with it.
Abortion was legal the last time I checked. Yes, I am very pro-abortion. Unlike the hypocrites from the Repubs.

That's a little unfair not to mention untrue.

Yes, it is. They kept a woman alive in TX, I believe, when she was brain dead because she was pregnant. Finally, they found that the child would have had severe problems and pulled the plug. Once your child is born, they'll take away funding for it. I don't think abortion should be used as birth control, but I believe in it. SCOTUS will probably take it away from the women. It's strange how Repub men are "concerned" about women.

The problem Donna is you're using such a wide brush. I travel a great deal in my work. I call on industrial accounts and I deal with all kinds of people. Purchasing agents and managers as well as engineers and maintenance people who are mostly union folks. I have learned that I must get along with all kinds of ideologies. So I listen but rarely offer an opinion as that's just not a wise thing for a salesman to do. What I've learned over the years has been surprising. While you can say that Republicans are generally pro-choice and Democrats are generally pro-abortion it remains a generalization. I know Republicans that are pro-choice in fact quite a few and I also was very surprised at how many Democrats are pro-life. I can't think of any specific issue that either side has a 100% lock on. While I am registered as an Independent I obviously lean more toward the Republicans because I am very conservative in my personal ideology. I think it's very short sighted and shallow for anyone to paint people as this or that because they are associated with this group or that. For example many who profess to be Christians, and its not my place to say they are or they aren't are on both sides of the abortion issue. Not all Republicans are anti-gay or pro-choice and you'd be surprised to know how many union members I know who are Republicans. Statements proclaiming Republicans are this or Democrats are that are generally wrong and only serve to keep us divided and in a constant state of confrontation and by doing so it only serves the politicians and its our country and the people who suffer as a result....Whew, end of rant.
