Yvonne learned to be a hairdresser - watching the tutor was 'wrong handed' for her till she watched the tutor through the mirror in front of the customer - then it made sense.....she used that trick to teach her daughter how to knit. They do do things differently (some very nicely)

I used to teach martial arts and, standing in front of a group instructing them, I had to be able to do everything from the left side to give students a mirror image to emulate.

Why would cameras need to be left handed, any more than a car, or a bicycle, or a keyboard??
Left handed people, are left handed, not disabled!
Yes, when using tools that are "handed", with the hand they were not designed to be used with, can be a special challenge, such as scissors, chain saws, electric drills and Japenese chefs knives that are only ground on one side.
But cameras are operated with both hands, not just one. At least that's how I do it. Now, the fact that I hold it upside down does get some funny looks!!

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Ignorance is bliss. I thought the first eye-level camera was invented by a lefty, which is why the critical adjustments are done with the left hand. I always wondered whether anyone made a right-handed camera.

As a lefty, even back in the "old" days of manual focus and manual film advance, a standard camera never felt awkward. Now after all this time, I think it would feel weird to release the shutter on the left.

Just a thought: do they make left handed cameras ? - do 'south paws' do things differently when taking photographs with a 'standard' camera? My wife just uses a sony P&S on Auto but it could make a good 'wind-up' for me to suggest that she's not holding it right....:-)

One of the world's best golfers plays from the left side. He is not left handed in anything else in life, just golf. He learned by watching and mimicking his father swing a golf club. He did everything opposite of his father, from the "other" side. "Lefty" finds his nickname amusing. Remember, left-handed people are the only people in their "right" minds!

I believe that about a year ago I read that Canon was offering or going to offer a DSLR. Check with your local camera dealer.

It seems to me that this is like asking if there is a left-handed piano. The high notes are on the right and the low notes are on the left, and that's just the way it is.

I'm left-handed, and my piano playing is no different that that of a right-handed person.

Maybe she can hold the camera up side down, and press the shutter with her left thumb.

I'm left handed and have learned, since a very young age, there are some things that are just 'neutral' when it comes to 'left or right' handed. I adapted and really don't notice any hardships. I view with my left eye, but hold the camera in my right hand and use my right hand-finger on the shutter, so not sure if I've become a 'right-handed' shooter, or 'left'?? I wonder, how would a 'left-handed' camera be different? I guess it might have the shutter release on the left side, eh? Interesting.....

He's a left also. Had a big printing co. but lost it after 9/11, so he's doing make overs of old condos, and can use all the power tools no problem.

Just an FYI:

In French, the word "left" (and awkward) is "gauche"

Webster defines gauche as:
"having or showing a lack of awareness about the proper way to behave : socially awkward"
