Others have mentioned some great spots. There is a plaza above town across the river called Piazza Michelango that has spectacular views of Florence and the Arno river at sunset.

Perfect spot

Just be careful. Those things in Florence that look like roast beef sandwiches with lots of juice are really tripe! lol

Yes, but the best tripe sandwiches I have ever had......

On my way to Florence and Rome this week, anyone have a favorite spot to take a picture, I need help with my composition! Thanks.

One site you might consider in Rome is the Baths of Caracalla, a little out of the way, but a great photo opportunity. Another site, unexplored, by tourists, is the Ardentine Caves, on the Appian Way. Here are the graves of hostages shot by the Germans as retribution for a partisan bombing of an SS police unit. The site took my breath away. Please don't miss the opportunity to shoot the major squares along with all the beautiful street life of the 2 cities.
