Make the climb to the top of St Peter's Basilica. There's a 360 view of Rome. Great spot for taking several shots for a stitched panorama. Lots of street opportunities. the open markets, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, the Pantheon.... In Florence, the Duomo, Pont del Vecchio & the River Arno.

Really too many places to visit....

Get advance tickets to avoid long lines

Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, Roman Forum, the Vatican, St. Peter's Square, etc. in Rome.

In Florence - the copy of Michelangelo's David, located outside in the square next to the Accademia, where the original David is displayed (you cannot photograph the original).

Hi jh3783, Longrangefinder has made some very good suggestions. I was there last week and in Rome I bought a 2 Euro map and a day ticket for the Metro, which is easy to use as there are only two lines, A & B. The Metro is very crowded so travel light and watch your pockets. Florence is easily walkable but all the main sights are very crowded so again travel light one camera and one lens, keep an eye out for pickpockets.
I mentioned the crowds particularly as it's virtually impossible to take any shots without people on them. I have attached a couple of shots which indicate what I mean.
I hope you have a great time.
John.

The three cathedrals in Florence, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce and the Duomo are must sees. The hills on the other side of the Arno have good perspectives. There is a small town, Fiesole, which is a 10 min bus ride from Florence and has wonderful views of all of Florence, and the town as some neat spots as well.

You nailed the spots in Florence!!! AS well as the bridges across the Arno. Also I believe the West end of town along the Arno at sunset there is a church with stained glass that the sun pass through - great spot. It is across the river upon a hill.

we took the bullet train from Rome to Florence and returned to Rome later for flight back.I highly recommend the train- unreal vistas all the way. Makes US trains look way behind the times. You will run out of time in Florence- there are so many incredible sights for photography

Just be careful. Those things in Florence that look like roast beef sandwiches with lots of juice are really tripe! lol

Put the subject of your photo (Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, St Peter's Basilica etc) into Google - when the results come up go to the "Images" tab at the top of the page and click on it. Chances are pretty high that you will quickly discover from which angles, viewpoints the best pics are taken.

Orvieto, hill top town just off the Autostrada between Florence and Rome is worth a stop. Pictruresque cathedral (Duomo) square. Renaissance flavor to the place.

Others have mentioned some great spots. There is a plaza above town across the river called Piazza Michelango that has spectacular views of Florence and the Arno river at sunset.
