There are way too many flower images posted. While they are beautiful they don't tell much of a story or evoke much inner feeling other than they are attractive. Same goes for birds, but at least many convey some sort of storyline or imagination.

So, carlsbadmike, please do all of us a favor, please make a list of what we should photograph, and what we should not photograph. I would be eternally grateful that an expert (I can only surmise you feel you are the expert based on your post) would help a poor, struggling person like me. Thank you kindly Sir!

At least birds move, often unpredictably, which can at least make bird photography a challenge.
But a flower isn't going to suddenly fly off on you, or come swooping in over your shoulder giving you a millisecond to react and get the photo.

Want a challenge. Try a Sweet 16 party.

I am not sure of the whole point of your post. Every image posted can be a learning experience. Unless you don't need to learn. I may not have time to comment on everything I see, but I can look for the light, exposure, focus and wonder how long someone waited to get that image or wonder how I could recreate the image my self. Maybe you need to re-think your goals about the blog.

Oh give me a break. This is ridiculous. If you don't like flower shots, then don't bother with them, but stop using ridicule to describe those of us who do. There are a number of 'non-moving' photo subjects that offer a challenge to shoot. To the original poster...this is the same old tired subject that's caused a lot of contention on a number of occasions.

Well said - different strokes for different folks - flowers give great pleasure and often evoke emotions due to their sheer beauty in colours, form and shape.

I belong to a rather large Photo Club made up of retirees. They have print showings and digital showings every week. When someone posts flowers the groans are deafening, followed by in united voice "It's A Picture of Flowers".

One answer to your question...winters are long. We have snow for many many months. Sometimes it's hard to even go anywhere to do photography because of the snow depth.
I spent one cold night on an ice road photographing the northern lights. Take a picture..get in the car...warm up and get back out to do more.
I love photography in all aspects, not just birds or flowers. However when I see the little birds coming back after a long winter or the flowers starting to bloom, believe me, I'll be taking pictures!
Not everyone is fortunate to live in a place that has it all for 12 months of the year.
It's springtime and flowers and birds will be posted.

Joined in May and already a complainer. Just don't look!
The value of any photo is not Alwasys the subject; sometimes you might even learn from the technique.

Let's take it easier on the OP, I think we all made it pretty clear that we *were* going to continue to take photos of flowers and BIF. He apologized.

I to recently joined the blog to be able to post replies, but prior to that I had been reading the newsletter for a couple of years.

As an individual reader (I love to read) I found that some of the replies were opinionated, some were informative, some were hilarious and some were thought provoking. Those that I did not agree with I skipped.

But this site overall lets everyone have a chance to express there views on a wide variety subjects from the serious to the hilarious with some helpful insight in between, it is also a sight for photography and getting help with new techniques or styles of photography.

Not everyone can shoot portraits, weddings or ads etc.. Some subjects are difficult to photograph others are easy.

My wife is always complaining that I don't have many photos of the family, but when someone doesn't want their photo taken you have to respect their privacy. I do sneak a shot here and there and it always surprises her that I did.

For a couple of years while in high school my family and I was the subject for a neighbor kid for practicing his portrait photography. My dad had also pushed me to be friends with this kid to learn photography. He was two grades ahead and did most of the photography for the yearbook. He also freelanced for at the Orlando Sports Arena shooting the wrestling matches, this was when pro wrestling was in its infancy.

I learned some about portrait photography and lighting but could never get my head wrapped around f stops, aperture and composition and their relationships to each other and I still have that problem today and my family thinks I take wonderful photos even if they are not the subjects.

Regardless of what we chose as our subject matter it takes practice to get to the point where we are comfortable with showing our photos to others, and yes someday I will post some photos (snapshots) that I have taken. I better close this reply before it starts to sound like I am rambling.

when I want to see a bird, I go over to Sam's Club bye one off the roaster. Take it home and do some excellent post processing like Mashed Potatoes, String Beans and a Salad and enjoy the artistry!!!

Personally. I take way too many pictures of flowers because I find them beautiful and exquisite creations. Priceless canine expressions are among my favorite animal shots. My issue is the relentless posting of the moon claiming better exposure times and f stops.

With tongue firmly in cheek (right cheek), I don't want to see any sunsets, sunrises, motocross, antique vehicles, moon, flowers, portraits, kids at play, raindrops on a cloudy day and on and on and on. I only want photos posted that are by accomplished and recognized as such, masters of photography.

I also want all new people to the UHH to have at least 5000 posts of asking questions before they can actually comment on a photo from another OP.

Oh yes, I also want World Peace.

Good shooting to all,

Dennis
