It could also be a dirty sensor. Dot you have a sensor cleaning kit or a sensor loupe?
Since they went away, they are either lens flare (but the odd placement of the artifacts suggest otherwise) of condensation within the lens.
Were it condensation on the sensor, the photographs would be unusable, unless so very minute, which is unlikely.
Did you say if they appeared on all of the outdoor pictures?
Sorry for the delayed response. Life sometimes gets in the way.
I did a bit more research and came to the conclusion that it is lens flare. I had initially discounted it because I was looking just at the one bright spot which showed up in the same location but different pictures had less defined spots in different locations. A google search on flares flare showed pictures that looked like mine. In reading about lens flare, zoom lens can do strange things in the sun because of the number of elements.
I do not think it was moisture as the shots were taken in RI where the inside and outside temp. were very close. No AC. I should have mentioned that earlier.
Thank you all for your responses and suggests. Next time lens hood on out door pictures.

Good to see your on the right track. If no lens hood is handy you can shade the lens with your hand, or hat, or just stand in front of it.
