No, but I would expect to purchase the same product at any of their stores or stations. It's easier for me to by pass all of them. Luckily, we have better choices in this area.[/quote]

I think you have missed the point, my friend. The issue here is not that Subway's muslim customers' wishes were being met, but that their non-muslim customers could no longer get what they wanted.
Exactly. I don't go there often, but I will no longer go to one. They don't serve what I want.
That Islamics should treat people as well as they'd treat a chicken would be good though.

Sure. Maybe it's a halal divorce. Those crazy Muslims! They'll do anything for a little news coverage.
If this is the best subject the entire lot of you can find to argue about, how a company conducts their business then this is indeed a pitiful bunch.

Maybe not the best, but we do like to argue about a lot of other things too. And, BTW, companies conduct business to attract the greatest number of customers. That's what made this topic more interesting. Oh well, off to another inane topic.

Awwww, c'mon. Giving up so soon?
I think the original writer did the issue a disservice by blaming the British Subway menu changes only on their Muslim customers. Due to health concerns, food preferences throughout the western world are away from meat, especially those like bacon which are high in nitrates. Other groups who require or prefer halal or kosher meats, shun pork, or follow a vegetarian diet include not only Muslims, but Jews, Hindus, Rastafarians, and Vegetarians. When you add up all the numbers, it represents over 9% of the British population, or 4.7 million people who are glad to see the products go. If this group ate just twice a month at Subway, that represents more than 122 million sandwiches per year, consumer demand which Subway serves poorly or is unable to serve right now. No business can afford that. Here are the numbers:
51,000,000 British Population
1,514,700 Muslim
54,060 Hindu
285,600 Jews
142,800 Buddhist
5,000 Rastafarian
153,000 Low Estimate of Vegetarians (Strict)
2,550,000 High estimate of Vegetarians (Preferred)
4,705,160 Total Which Prefer Halal, Kosher, Veg
9.23% Percent of Total British Population
Bacon and pork adherents, look at the positive side of this. There is a business opportunity out there for someone to do a pork and bacon themed restaurant.
All those British statistics but wasn't the op talking about Ireland?

I quit going to Subway when I found Jersey Mikes. Subway sucks!

I think the original writer did the issue a disser... (

Subway stores are local enterprises - they are serving the needs of their local population - just like many other ethnic and specialty restaurants.

Disagree on both points. Subway is an international corporation(s) that owns or owned corporate stores and franchise units. All must abide by corporate policies.
Second - by choosing to remove selected items from their menus, they cease serving all of the "local population" and instead now serve a selected religious group simply to satisfy the group's demand to eliminate pork products from the menu.

Subway is an international corporation but the individual stores are local and serve a local clientele. Like many chain stores (restaurants and other) they modify their offerings to meet the needs of that local clientele.
