I always have my Sony RX100 with me, and I did get the EVF because I must always have a VF option. Most of the time I don't need it, but for the beach or panoramic work, it fits the bill. It's very pricey, but I like the images from the RX100 too much not to have it with me.

Look at the size, the features, and the reviews.
Wow - so much for logic and trying to help the person who initiated this thread.
NO one is arguing about image quality and the RX100.
It is the SIZE factor (and perhaps weather resistance) that are the criteria.
Enough of this popularity voting contest.
I bought on a whim at a wharehouse type store a little Nikon Coolpix S3500. I really liked it because it was purple, then I looked more. It is a 20.1 Megapixel 7 times zoom that is not bad at all. It was I think about $80 or $90. I just love it. I have it in my purse (small purse) or it fits into pants pocket easily. I am so glad I saw it and bought it. It is a great little camera.

As an alternative to a pocket, consider the OP/Tech Snappeez (f) Wide Body Horizontal Large 4.25"W X 2.5"H X 0.75" - 1.25"D pouch with a Sony RX100/II...great combo. Fits on a belt loop, very comfortable and easy in/out.
I purchased a Canon PowerShot A1400 from Amazon.com a couple of months ago. It only cost me about $60 at the time, and churned out pretty good looking photos, at least during the daylight hours. It isn't very good with low light situations though, and isn't very "tinker friendly" for those of us that like to use manual or semi-automatic modes.
I just purchased a Canon PowerShot G16 (no, I'm not made of money, my camera purchases for this year are over), and it is a MUCH better camera, has manual mode and the standard semi-automatic modes, image stabilization, and takes pretty darned good photos.
Decide what you are most likely going to be using the pocket type camera for, then use some of the resources other folks have shared here, to determine the best camera for your needs.
Seriously though, I was doing pretty good with that little A1400, so that tells me that you can make decent pictures with pretty much any P&S camera. Here's a shot I posted on this forum, from my A1400:

A few years ago, I bought a Samsung for my wife and since she doesn't use it much, I've taken it over. It fits in my shirt pocket and takes very nice pix. Nothing like my Nikon, but not that bad.
I've had a Canon SX220 for about 3 years. It takes very good pictures and has a lot of features along with a respectable zoom and1080P video.
Eventhough I am now using a bridge camera, I still use the SX 220 when I need a pocketable camera in situations where the bridge camera is too bulky to cart around.
One flaw with the SX220 is the flimsy leaf shutter that closes when the camera is turned off. Mine had to be unbent on a few occasions. I don't know if recent models have the same problem. Good luck in your shopping.
