Canon SX gets good reviews and many use them on UHH

Panasonic makes some very good small pocket cameras. See reviews at Imaging-Resource.com

I have both. I use the Fuji waterproof for the beach, the pool and kayaking. It's great for that but it's not good at red eye reduction for
indoors. My Canon 260 is fine as a pocket camera although it is larger than the smaller compacts. It has a nice 25x zoom and you can control aperture and shutter speed. No RAW though, only JPEG. Canon now has a 280. None of these pocket cameras replace my DSLR cameras but they come in handy when you don't want to carry anything big.
Bill.

The most convenient camera to have with you all the time is a smart phone although there is no zoom.

I have a Sony RX-100 that will fit in my shirt pocket. It is a great camera with a large sensor and all the modes.

I posted the same question a few weeks ago when I joined this cool site.
For the same reason - something tiny BUT with acceptable IQ (I use dSLRs), and that shoots in RAW.

Hope to make a decision soon.
For me a viewfinder is critical - so the Panasonic Lumix LF-1 is where I'm leaning. The Sony RX-100 is bigger and has no viewfinder, altho it's IQ is closer to that of dSLR than most small cameras.
Like you - I'm looking for something truly 'pant's pocket small' - cognizant of the compromises necessitated by wanting to 'always have it with me'.

(And don't get me started on a telephone' masquerading ' as a camera !)

I always have my Sony RX100 with me, and I did get the EVF because I must always have a VF option. Most of the time I don't need it, but for the beach or panoramic work, it fits the bill. It's very pricey, but I like the images from the RX100 too much not to have it with me.

I just tried putting my RX100M2 in my shirt pocket. Very bad form. My wife looked at me like I was 'wacky.' Who does that!

Nikon P7800 has viewfinder and shoots RAW. a little larger than some pocket cameras, but manageable

These are two very different options, if you absolutely need a waterproof camera then that answers that question right there.

And which SX model are you looking at? Some are much too large to be considered pocket cameras.

Need a bit more specific info from you here.

Again -- the IQ of a truly portable, in your pants pocket, thin, unobtrusive camera that you truly will have with you all the time is not going to rival your "real" camera. That's why God (or Darwin) created the SLR and the new mirrorless cameras and expensive glass -- yada yada. I've already got my dSLR with three lenses but need the true pocket camera for EVERY day. This is what the poster asked about.
If the RX 100 won't fit in my jeans pocket without discomfort or makes me look like a dufus hanging out of my shirt pocket then I'm going with something really small.
No bricks and mortar around here that stock these so when in NYC next week I'm going to check it and the Lumux LF-1 out in person, and likely go with the latter due to its thinness and viewfinder.

Many smartphones have limited electronic zoom capability. As much as you recommend these devices, I'm surprised you don't know that. :)

Also there are a few companies that make accessory lens attachments for them, but I can't attest to their quality.

Sony make the DSC series of cameras that attach to an iPhone.
