Blackpool is pretty rough! Blackpool Tower with it's amazing ballroom and Wurlitzer organ is special though.

I guessed it would be Coney Island-ish....but I've gotten some of my favorite shots at places like that...i.e. Brighton's Palace Pier. "Deck chairs , rubber dingies, old Dad's braces hanging down.". What's it like in early May?

Hi....can anyone suggest some places of interest (photographic or otherwise) in the area stretching from York in the east to Liverpool/Blackpool in the west? I like oddball, quirky and scenic. Thanks.

If you are staying in Manchester you should visit Chester - a Roman walled city like York - and a short drive beyond to the west are the Welsh hills and Snowdonia. There is a motorway (Interstate) linking Manchester to Chester and another one going from the Chester area up the Wirral Peninsula through a tunnel under the River Mersey directly into Liverpool. Driving the by-roads in Cheshire County between Manchester and Chester will also give you many scenic English villages and Elizabethan black and white timbered buildings for unique photographs. Chester is also renowned for its two level shopping areas on the city center streets known as "The Rows". Which I am sure you can see if you do an internet search and which are also well worth photographing together with the riverside on the Dee river. To the south of Manchester and to the southeast you will be on the western edge of the Derbyshire Peak District distinctly different from the green fields and low rolling hills of Cheshire. Chatsworth House is a reachable destination and is ranked in the top tier of English Country Houses and Estates that are open to the public - well worth the time to visit. There are also canals running through the whole area where one can photograph the colorful long boats now mainly used as floating vacation vessels. Take plenty of memory cards and an umbrella - it rains a fair bit from time to time!
Blackpool has a tower not unlike a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and a world famous light show in the latter end of the year depending on when you are going to be in the area.
Have a great time and do sample the friendliness and beers in the many local pubs you will find round most corners.

If you are up for a stiff hike find Edale, southern terminus of the Pennine Way. Path leads up to the moors. Caution: bring a compass even for a short stroll I
on the moor as it is easy to become totally disoriented by the terrain.

Great destinations!!! I'm parking myself at a Manchester hotel and car rental and striking out to explore all these places in day trips along the a and b roads. No one has mentioned Blackpool. Is this due to a high tat quotient?

I was there over Easter with family..I enjoy Blackpool..but it's not everybody's cup of tea, it can be loud and brash!!

Not really. It has a huge promenade (the golden mile) with three piers and fun park, and even a zoo, but just up the coast is Lytham St Annes (the open is sometimes hosted there)it is a lovely resort. On a nice day nothing better than walk the sands between the two resorts.

Looks nice, Doddy....I'll only have a few days so I'll need to pick and choose. Your info is helping me make the best of my time.

I am a little surprised that no one seems to have mentioned the Lake District. Absolutely beautiful photography opportunities!

You are so right!

However, I would say that I would keep away from the tourist hot spots. OK, see Bowness on Windermere, (perhaps take a boat up the lake) but then perhaps go west to the Langdales or east to Ulleswater.
Don't forget waterproofs. It isn't called the Lake District for nothing!

May I suggest you budget for a Sat Nav. It will save you loads of frustration and time!!

The North of England is a lovely place but of course it does not stand comparison against the south. God!Now I'm in the crap.
