Hi....can anyone suggest some places of interest (photographic or otherwise) in the area stretching from York in the east to Liverpool/Blackpool in the west? I like oddball, quirky and scenic. Thanks.

Knaresborough, quite close to York, a very quirky place where teddy bears are hung and petrified in the mineral waters.

Try Crosby beach north of Liverpool. The beach has lifesize statues scattered all over the shore. They were designed by Antony Gormley the man who designed the huge Angel of the north statue in Gateshead. but really you will be spoilt for choice as a lot of spots will only be known by locals..most of our towns and cities have a tourist information office's which are brilliant for free brochures and info.

Eccentricity is in the people, not the places nor objects.
The North of England is very photogenic with its rolling landscapes, rugged escarpments, but its on a different level to say, the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls and the Swiss Alps.

Look around and you will find cottages 500 years old, there are some villages which have not changed architecturally for a century, but there are also the townships which are as modern as any in the world.

It is the character of the people which lends itself to the myths of quirkiness, for instance later in May we have the great Cheese Rolling - where people throw themselves down a very steep hill in pursuit of a round of cheese. This occurs in Gloucestershire, Southern England. In the North we have the Gurning competition held in Cumbria, where competitors pull faces - the most distorted being the winner.

Then of course, we have the Maypole dancers where men dress up with ribbons and bells and skip around a pole holding and winding more ribbons . . .

The Royal Armouries in Leeds (25 miles west of York) are fantastic. Great for photographic opportunities too.

30 miles further west Skipton Castle would be well worth a visit.

In York - the Minster, the Shambles, the castle, the National Railway Museum, the riverside, York station, Jorvik Viking Museum -

In Tadcaster - John Smith's Brewery.

In Harrogate - the Spa, Betty's Tea Shop

Just before Skipton - Bolton Abbey

10 miles north of Skipton - Grassington - lovely village beside the River Wharfe, just walk around, loads to see. Small village a mile to the south of Grassington- Linton - beautiful.

Only a few miles west of Grassington - Malham Cove and Gordale Scar - be prepared to walk a little.

Loads of info on all these places on Google. Oh, you want something else that's quaint? Listen carefully to the local accents wherever you go !

NYjoe, you are so right! I spent so much of my childhood up Wharfedale fishing.

Burnsall just a few miles downstream is lovely.

Great destinations!!! I'm parking myself at a Manchester hotel and car rental and striking out to explore all these places in day trips along the a and b roads. No one has mentioned Blackpool. Is this due to a high tat quotient?

Send a pm to Briace, who lives in Liverpool. He posts a lot of great photos from the Liverpool area on fb.
