If your pictures aren't turning out red, then your WB must be okay.

I have a D70 converted to IR, and also use a custom wb using green grass, but my shots still come out red and require color shift in pp. I purchased the converted camera second hand and I'm not sure which filter was used. Does your D70 IR shots not turn out red and not require color shift?

It comes out a bronze color not red. You can see samples of each filter at LifePixwl.com

I used to shoot IR film in the old days, with the deep red filter. The advantage of the conversion is short shutter times.

Agreed, at least with the old bodies such as the D70, the shutter times are not the worst in the world but I think to easily shoot IR, you really have to convert bodies. For the new bodies such as the D7000 the shutter times are so long that for me it would be difficult to use with an external IR filter. The plus on the D7000 is that the liveview can boost the image enough with the external IR filter that I can at least compose through it.

I think someone asked about "too red" on a D70 converted body. Here is a crop of an in-camera jpg using a hoya72 and custom wb. This is a good start for post processing but it probably depends on what the conversion filter is as to what you want the in-camera image to look like to get good results. When I'm shooting IR with the filter it seems like I need to have the histogram peak in the middle of the screen verses with visible light where you can have it to the right. Pushing to the right with the IR gets me very overexposed IR shots. I don't know if that makes the in-camera image a bit red perhaps if the custom wb is not spot on?

My D40 doesn't do purple at all with normal white balancing (yes, I set it correctly). The purples always come out a very nice blue. When I custom white balance the purples come out the right shade of purple. My experience is that the D40 does a good job with custom white balancing (at least with purple).

I'm thinking of having LifePixel convert my D40 to IR, using their Super Color filter. They say that the D40, among others, doesn't do the custom WB very well. I thought I'd ask others before taking the plunge. I had a D70 converted with the normal IR filter, and that works fine.

I was going to convert a d40x but had the same concerns. instead found a d80 on ebay that was already converted for less than the cost of the conversion and I am very happy with the d80.

Just turned around and sold the d40x to cover some of the cost.
