Sorry to have to say it, but this is one of those "can't get there from here" situations.

3 KB? Good luck! MT Shooter nailed it. You have virtually nothing to work with. You could get a decent postage stamp out of it, though.

I was recently approached by a good friend who asked if I would be able to make a usable print out of an image she had taken with her cellphone. When she presented me with the image, attached, I found it was only 3 kb in size to begin with. I have tried increasing the file size by 10% at a time and used PSE 10 and Genuine Fractals but can't bring it up to a printable image. I know of no other ways to approach this and thought I'd check with the group for any ideas. The focus is very "soft" to begin with.

How did she send the photo to you? If she texted it to you then the phone will resize the photo and there's no way you can get a large print out of it. If she still has it on her phone, she has to connect the phone to her computer and upload it to her computer like some people do with there cameras. I don't know how many megapixles her phone is, but if it's a 3mp camera in her phone then she will have a photo good enough to print. If she doesn't have a printer, then she'd have to email the photo to you from her computer or put it on a flash drive and hand it to you.

I agree. A 3 mp should do OK. A problem I've had is the format the phone saves under. Some phones have a propriertory system (sp) that doesn't convert well to the usual formats such as Jpeg. This could make a good thread. In fact I'm starting it now.

Take a picture of the image on your computer screen. Then you will have lots of pixels to play with. Got to be better than what you have now!

My co-worker has had good results with this technique - give it a try. . .

First, make the BEST quality print of the 'small' pic that you can. Glossy paper, printer set to highest resolution, etc.

Then, scan it - again highest quality that you have on your scanner.

Now - work your 'magic' with your PP tools.

Good luck & let me - us - know how your final print works out.

I almost got passable results scanning an old picture with a tiny face at 4800 dpi. Would have been great, but there was a texture on the photo that showed up as giant craters on the scan.

Your best chance is thecomment that said, take a picture of the print. If a file, print a 4x6 and see what that looks like and if OK take a picture, then you will have something to work with.

You may not be able to fix that photo, but you can help in the future. Grab that cell phone and figure out where in the settings to set that camera to the best resolution possible. My oldest BlackBerry was able to take photos at 1600 x 1200 resolution.

You'd be hard pressed to get a decent 5X7 out of a file that is 500kb in size, so even with magic Genuine Fractals it would take a miracle to achieve an interlacing boost of 150X as many pixels.

First, a @#$&ing telephone should be used to verbally communicate and a CAMERA should be used to visually communicate. I hate the confused attempts to combine tools.
Second, I might try making a fairly small print, say one inch by whatever...or so...then make a hires scan on a good flatbed and see what can be done.
Most likely it will still be a piece of garbage but it might smell a bit better.

Nice profile pic, I like it. That looks like a sketch, that's a good one.

The image that was posted is only 120 by 160 pixels. My gut instinct tells me that this is only a thumbnail image used for display on a small cell phone screen. There is probably a larger version of this image still on the phone.

I mean, really. Why would a cell phone manufacturer make a camera with a 120x160 resolution? A picture that small is useless in every way. There's got to be a larger version.
