Central park could be awesome if you only look. Take a walk on Elevated park on west side between 10th and 30th. Take a walk thru manhattan, and look up, a lot of fauna being grown on those terraces etc.
Just have fun, don't make it a mission.

I think the best (and most common) shots on Long Island are nautical. We have some good historic places like Port Jefferson. The Eastern part is beautiful with Sag harbor, Montauk and the wine counrty on the north fork.

500 miles north of NYC is Letchworth State Park (known as the Grand Canyon of the East)with beautiful scenery and waterfalls, Watkins Glen with Seneca Lake and it's trail up thru a waterfall canyon in a rock wall, Hammondsport at the head of Keuka Lake voted the best small town in America in the middle of wine country with it's vineyards and rolling hill - lots of scenery shots, and if you want to Niagara Falls is just 100 west of here, the Adirondaks a 4 hour drive east of here - heck - you may not want to go back to NYC!!!

StonyClove Loc: Catskill Mountains, NY

jerryc41 hit the nail on the head vis-a-vis the Catskills, but he left out Katterskill Falls in Greene County, alleged place where Rip Van Winkle encountered the ghosts of Henry Hudson's sailing crew bowling nine-pins. Don't get too close to the edge. Several fatalities every year. The Ashokan Reservoir can be breathtaking at sunset, and easy access. One of the best photo ops I had in NYC recently was the HighLine elevated walkway on the West Side - quickly becoming a world famous urban phenomena. The 1.2 mile "Walkway Over the Hudson" spans the Hudson River atop a railway trestle between Highland and Poughkeepsie, and has become the top tourist attraction in NY. Views are expansive. Bring a Polarizer filter.

South of the "glen" - Corning? Elmira? Ithaca - Cayuga Lake, home of Cornell University? I grew up in Hammondsport, moved to Henrietta 50 years ago but go back down to visit the area once in awhile.

At Kaaterskill Falls between Palenville and Haines Falls, it's best to photograph from the bottom of the falls. Park at the parking lot above the horseshoe bend in route 23a (you will see the trail sign to the falls at horseshoe bend), then walk down the road to the trail (be careful-very narrow road). The Hike to the base of the falls is less than a mile and is very scenic in its own right (nice photographic stream along the way). Best to go when there is higher water (in the spring, or after a rain event). Also, on the drive up 23 to the Falls stop at some of the pull off areas and get your camera out.

Also, go up to North/South Lake and hike the beginning of the escarpment trail--nice views of the Hudson valley.

Another very scenic area for photographs is the Olana Historic site south of Hudson near the Rip Van Winkle bridge-beautiful view of the Hudson River and Catskills from the grounds. Walk the grounds, and also take a tour of Olana while you are there and enjoy the paintings of Hudson River School Artist Frederic Church.
