I'll never be a professional. I look at composition, lighting, posture, angles, front, center and back, before I shoot. I may not do very well but I attempt to do all these things because I want to do it well. Graham Smith and several others here are not professional and they do some wonderful things. Anyone that spends time here is a photographer, IMHO.

Does one have to be a "professional" photographer to feel welcomed here? I think not. So all this concentration about who is a photographer and who is not is just a waste of time and a bit an ego display. Lets just have fun, learn and share what we know. Please. I agree with you David.

All you have to do is sell a picture (or maybe more pictures) and you are now a professional.

Same here, I agree with you both, Photography is all about seeing and capturing the world and all she has to offer at any given moment in time, Pro or no Pro, it is all there to be had and to enjoy by all with a camera or a crayon...

I forgot to say being a professional only means you make money at it not that you are necessarily a good photographer.

A cell phone requires very little skill.

Geez Jim, maybe I'm taking this way too out of context, since I skipped the first 8 pages.
Why does a cell phone take less skill than a d800 with a 500mm lens?
They in fact take the exact same skills.
They may be set up completely different. With the 800 more specialized to get say, a good BIF.
But the composition skills required to produce a good shoot are equal. There are in fact guys here with D800 that aren't as good as guys who use only cell phones. The tools are not the same, but the skills needed are the same. There are plenty of people using phone cameras that exhibit no skills whatsoever, but that's also true of people using d800's!
Or did I miss something? ;-)

If I were you, I'd let your doctor take a look-sounds nasty.

Yup, if you owned a wrench, you could be a plumber, electrician or maybe a desk jockey wanting to tighten his loose nuts??

What's the point?

No, Photodog, owning a tool does not mean you know how to use it, much less well enough to be called professional.
Owning a wrench does not make you a plumber, own a hammer does not make you a carpenter, owning a trowl does not make you a mason.
Having used a tool a few times does not mean you are proficient at it and can claim to be a pro.
Having spent 30+ years in a construction trade I know this to be fact. There were many occasions when I had to sort them out. Thats just the way it is.
Sorry, but we all have to make our mistakes in any field and learn how to be proficient before we can claim to be a ______(fill in the blank)

You have to know how to use the tools, and use them proficiently in situations as they arise to earn the title.

Obviously the point is that without fully understanding the magnitude, direction and intensity of light, and how to modify and manipulate the same, plus the basics of composition and perspective, you will never be a photographer-dictionary quotes are irrelevant, as lexicologists do not under stand what it takes to be a photographer.

To be a professional your income needs to be 100% from photography
