When I take a really good photo my wife says what a good camera you have..
When she cooks a great meal, I say I am glad we bought that new stove.

We don't see adds stating " you are not a driver, you just have an overpriced car" .....wouldn't sell many cars would it lol

a photographer makes the image with his eye and mind, before he even picks up the camera

Which is why the endless debates about the best equipment & so on is woefully off-target. I call this skill (nekon's concept) as developing an "eye for the image" -- and those images don't all need to be "art" to qualify as real photography.

Shoot with whatever you have on hand, but always have an image in your mind, then force your camera to reproduce it as faithfully as you can. Invest in new equipment only when you've reached your limits with what you currently have but still want to go further.

And be humble enough to realize when you haven't quite reached your limits yet. :-)

I'll never be a professional. I look at composition, lighting, posture, angles, front, center and back, before I shoot. I may not do very well but I attempt to do all these things because I want to do it well. Graham Smith and several others here are not professional and they do some wonderful things. Anyone that spends time here is a photographer, IMHO.

Thankyou.

I suppose it all comes down to what the purpose of the ad really is. If it is for photography training, then I can see the reasoning. It actually is kind of an interesting way to state it.

If they are just being insulting because they think you should have their brand of camera instead, then they can <expletive deleted by poster>.

There are a lot of people who happily take snapshots. The people trying to shoot photographs is a much smaller number.

I shoot both. It depends on the time and the place.

By my definition, a snapshot records what is happening without consideration other than a few settings on the camera, and a photograph is a planned effort, generally requiring more effort to arrange the subject, the light, etc.

Some photos break the definition slightly, like sports shots. Not much you can do about the lights or the position of the subject, but proper planning with the right equipment in the right place pushes a professional's shots into the "photo" category.

On the other hand, my brother, who is part owner of a darkroom in Los Angeles, says that a snapshot is just a picture, but that a photograph is something that can be sold. (Not withstanding the paparazzi category.) I see his point but I don't agree with it.

So, maybe that is it? Maybe that is the discussion they want to generate?

Or maybe it came from the overly smug sites: http://youarenotaphotographer.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/YouAreNotAPhotographer and http://youarenotaphotographer.tumblr.com/

sorry this is wrong, everyone who uses a camera is a photographer.

cellphone to take pictures = photographer
p/s = photographer
film camera = photographer
DSLR = photographer

it SHOULD say:

you are not a PROFESSIONAL photographer... you just have an overpriced camera.

LOL not everyone who uses any type of camera is a Photographer, that's just wrong lol.

Have you seen the videos of the pro photographers using toy cameras and getting great shots? It isn't the camera. A good one sure helps, but it is the eye not the camera.

I think the whole point of the image is about Canon users.

Glad to see the Canon version came out first.

Somewhere a long time ago I heard that, if you utter the words, "if I only had my camera" that you are not a photographer. :)

I really like that one. I have carried my camera to so many inconvenient places, and sometimes never got a chance at a decent shot, but I had it, just in case.

I guess I might actually be becoming a photographer, after all.

Some folks take snapshots. Some take photographs. There is a difference.

I delude myself into thinking I take both snapshots and photographs and can tell the difference between them.

I have the same delusion! :)

Obviously, the quality of photography an individual does varies for many reasons -- two important reasons being skill level and the influence of money.

Because photography functions as a craft, it requires skillful use of photographic technique in order to produce a worthy photograph. In the computer age, however, automation has reduced the requirement of acquiring skill to do photography in a mechanical sense. This fact leaves the techniques that go beyond automation still resting in the hands of the craftsman. His practice will distinguish his photography.

The quest for money when doing photography will introduce an economic bias to the work of the photographer. He will endeavor to produce “money shots.” Put another way, he will do photography to please an audience for money. This bias will manifest itself in the kind and quality of the photographs this photographer produces.

In any event, today, photographic activity spans from the snapshooter to the fine artist. Let’s enjoy doing photography whatever our motivation for it.
Obviously, the quality of photography an individua... (show quote)

Everything is overpriced isn't it? I understand that making a profit is considered almost evil but geez folks have to eat and we all want new and improved but we just hate paying for the R&D. Oh well what fun would life be if we couldn't bitch now and then.

I suppose you feel the membership dues here @ The Hogg are "overpriced". Are you one of the moochers who feel if they have to pay for something it is overpriced? That seems to be an epidemic in this country now.
