My husband tells me that every time I want to get something---when I was thinking about trying a teleconverter, when I wanted a macro lens, when I wanted a telephoto lens. He thinks I am crap and constantly says "Well, you know you are not a photographer".

Somewhere a long time ago I heard that, if you utter the words, "if I only had my camera" that you are not a photographer. :)

Not so much in some photography groups - but still so many expect new comers to have mega $$ to spend immediately.

Or even want the latest and/or greatest! Many are content with film and produce stunning images that beat out 99% of us picture takers.

I doubt that. Such people tend to have no sense of humor, as you clearly do.

Until you understand, fully the basics of photography, you are just a camera owner, with a piece of expensive jewellery around your neck.

You've never seen great pictures taken with an instamatic or an iPhone? The image might not be technically a masterpiece, but it captures and conveys a powerful story or message.

I'll never be a professional. I look at composition, lighting, posture, angles, front, center and back, before I shoot. I may not do very well but I attempt to do all these things because I want to do it well. Graham Smith and several others here are not professional and they do some wonderful things. Anyone that spends time here is a photographer, IMHO.

Bravo.

My reference was to Michael66. To Dragon, I hope you hang in there & build your art to the shape that's right for you.

Training & practice matter. But - have you ever noticed how many great photos are just a matter of luck, or of being fast enough to seize the moment? Plus the wonderful surprise when you are reviewing what you've done, you see THAT PHOTO & say in amazement "Did I do that?" (extra points if you do the Urkel voice)

Any one who picks up and uses a camera of any kind make or design has the potential to be or become a photographer of note...We are all born as equals and remain so until proven otherwise.

Very good. Those who call themselves photographers just because they take pictures and have an expensive equipment do not do justice to the word "photographer".

One button, one push picture takers describe them much better.

To be a photographer takes time. Most that purchase expensive cameras do it just for bragging rights and do not know the basics of photography.

Anyone that answers this negatively is not a photographer.

So, what exactly is the point of the quote?
