I've been an AARP member for about 18 years. I get discounts at hotels & motels. One night discount usually pays for my yearly membership. Also, you get discounts at movie theaters and some restaurants.

We were members of AARP for a number of years, but determined that they were not working for the normal individual, but for themselves and the federal government. We are no longer a member and will not be again. They have been making a lots of money supporting Obama Care and I for one am not for it.

If you like your Doctor you can keep your Doctor. Period!AARP sold everyone down the river in order to profit from sale of supplemental insurance. Plus most Hoteleries don't even bother to ask if you have the card anymore. They just take a look and say "We give the seniors discount".

I've belonged to AARP since I reached that magic age. Now I'm wondering if I should continue with it. Sure, I can get a discount somewhere, but I can get the same discount from AAA or other organizations. When their newspaper comes, it just goes onto the recycling pile.

Am I missing something?

You are absolutely right Kentee. AMAC is the way to go. Until AARP takes a more neutral, or better yet a right lean, they will not have my support. AARP is not worth it.

I have always found agencies that have better prices than AARP. A friend of mine once told me to check into auto insurance with AARP, she said they had very low rates. I went online filled out the information and a day later got a call from Hartford, (I think it was), their rate was over three times what I was currently paying. And for less coverage to boot!

I'll close my comments on this with a simple observation on the (respective) magazines of AAA and AARP - at one time, like when I joined AAA over sixty years ago, the magazine was full of tips about driving and maintaining cars, how to get help on the road, what to see where for a discount, etc. There were even short stories, crosswords and a page for the kids.

Now, it's all "Take this cruise," fly this airline, visit our sponsors, etc. Useless for the "Driving Public" as such.

I often disagree, politically, with AARP - but they poll there membership on what stands to take on issues. If the membership becomes polarized, left or right, so does the organization. I think that, overall, I save more money with AARP. TTThhaaatttt'ss all, Folks!!!

I cut up my AARP card a couple of years ago when AARP pitched for Obamacare.
I then joined AMAC which actually supports seniors.

AARP is really just an insurance and marketing operation which disguises itself as an advocacy organization for people over 50.

I have to agree. It is not now what the founder set it up to be. It's nothing but a insurance company with a lot of high paid lobbyists and may or may not be on the side of the senior citizen, depending on what will make them an extra billion or two.

Made the mistake of reading one of their news letters, cut up the card and now consider anything from them junk mail. BTW Every time I ask if a business offers an AARP discount or a senior citizen discount it always amounts to the same thing. Just ask and they'll give you the AARP discount whether your a member or not.

Jerry it seems as tho you do like most of, it goes from the mailbox to the trash on arrival. Any discounts offered are minimalistic in nature. The insurance offered is overrated and over priced. I personally have backed away from them as I saw nothing offered of interest to myself.

I am both a CARP (Canadian model) and AARP. Not in it for the discounts but do enjoy the online articles and the information that is provided re finances, diet, health, senior stuff etc. also have fun with some of the surveys that they offer.

AARP has over 40 million members. My wife and I belong. We occasional discounts when traveling. If they do, in fact have a liberal, progressive philosophy, I'm all for that ! :-). Henry

I'm gonna check this out BTW, "Liberal" and "Progressive" aren't the same thing in politics - or, at least they didn't used to be.

I'm a multi-generational Republican, but I don't hate Democrats - at times, if they're good people, I even vote for some of them.

I what you to wed, or not, as you wish. I want you to own or not own guns as you wish. I want women to be "allowed" to "own their own bodies and make decisions that they wish - if they are wrong that is their business (and their Gods business) not MINE!

That being said, I Want A "Balanced Budget" Amendment and strict controls on political parties.

I will gladly give you a "hand-up"; I will not give you a "hand-out." Okay? Again,my opinions, no offense to anyone intended.
