I sent my D600 back in January the turnaround time was total 2 weeks including shipping time, they replaced the shutter and cleaned out the sensor, they did an excellent job, my pictures are very clean now no spots and they actually explained what the techs did to the camera. On February 28th I received a letter from Nikon stating that I do not have to re-send my camera for repairs since my camera had all the repairs needed in January. My past experience with Nikon repairs has been excellent they are very responsive and professional.

Will be interested in hearing replies to your post. My D600 got a new shutter months ago, well before Nikon sent out the letters and email notices. I suspect they have had a flood of returns that will negatively affect the time a repair will take. My past experiences with Nikon Repair the in-house time has been around a week with a couple of days shipping to and from. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Let us know how it works out. ;)

I got mine back in about 2weeks but it came back with a defect in the focus points capacity (a6), I am now waing for it to come back .It has been 10 days. Marvin 80

You should get yours by Friday or Monday the latest.
I sent mine in February 26 and received mine back this afternoon - exactly 14 day turn-around.
They replaced shutter mechanism, CKD AF system, CLN Image Sensor, CKD AE Operation, CKD Aperature Operation, CKD Flash Operation and Gereral Check and clean

I did 70 test shots at F20, very clean (not a single spot). When I sent mine in, the shutter was around 7000 (not 10,000 I mentioned before). The shutter for the 70th shot was 1132. Apparently, it is a new shutter and they did 1064 test shots.

Hope the above information will get you some inside of the current D600 shutter replacement advisory operation.

TH

I took my camera directly to Melville about an hours drive from hastings. I was slightly over the warranty. Nikon did the repair for free in about 7 days. I also picked it up. They replace the shutter and some sponges. I have not used the camera since the repair but plan to this week-end. I have no idea if I had an issue. The camera is great; however I believe Nikon should have replaced all the D600's as they issued a new D610 or allow you to up grade at a modest cost.

I've enjoyed reading all of your comments. Thanks for responding. My camera is stuck in-transit (UPS), and will be delivered to Nikon tomorrow (Monday). Hmm, a week to ship it. I hope Nikon's faster in repairing it <grin>. Will keep all of you posted as it progresses. BTW, I loaned my D90 to my daughter, so I'm basically loaded with glass and nothing to put them on. Migrating birds are moving through Iowa now, so I'm really anxious to get the D600 back.

As promised, here's my response after getting the camera back from Nikon LA. It's also posted under "My Nikon D605 came today!!!"

My Nikon D605 came today!!!
Well, okay, it's really my D600 that I sent under the service advisory. I figure it's still at least half of the original D600, and maybe it's got the 610's shutter assembly, so from now on I'm calling it my "D605."

My experience sending it to the LA facility was extremely good. The slowest part was transportation; UPS took 6 days each way from Iowa. It was in LA for precisely five days.

The invoice reports that they replaced the shutter mechanism and related parts, adjusted auto focus operation, checked bayonet mount, cleaned image sensor, and performed a general check and clean. I noticed that they also upgraded the software to the new version, and put on at least 1,000 shutter actuations.

The few (5) dust spots I had in the upper left corner are gone, and everything is squeaky clean.

Nikon's communication was good throughout the process.

I was surprised and pleased that they did more than replace the shutter. It sounds like they also did their complete service routine.

I hope all of you who have the D600 will have similarly good experiences when you send it in to be morphed into a D605! If you're wondering if you should send it in, have no fear.

I'm happy to be shooting again, and pretty confident that the problem is gone for good.

I got mine back and it is not showing any signs of spots, dust whatever. I also got a message from a friend that said Nikon would replace D600's with continued problems with a D610, this is the website link;

www.slrlounge.com

I haven't seen anything on the Nikon site about this program though, seems to me they should have owned the issue much earlier and should just make the exchanges for anyone who has had ANY issues.

It is on the Nikon site. If I remember it's listed under "Service Advisories" in the Support section.

Here is the direct quote from Nikon:

Announcement Regarding the Nikon D600 Digital SLR Camera
March 28, 2014

With regard to the issue with which multiple granular black spots are reflected in images captured with the D600 digital SLR camera, Nikon sincerely apologizes for any concern and inconvenience suffered by D600 users, retailers, and all concerned.

Because Nikon takes this matter very seriously, we will continue to offer users of the D600 a special service with which cameras are inspected, cleaned, and if necessary, shutter and related components are replaced free of charge, even after the product warranty has expired. However, if a number of multiple granular black spots are still noticeable in images captured with a D600 upon which the above service has been performed several times, Nikon will replace it with a new D600 or an equivalent model.

Nikon will continue to work to improve the quality of its products and services even further.
We hope that you will continue to choose Nikon products for your photographic needs.
