I believe this is a female Redwing Blackbird since there was a male close by. Anyone care to post a positive ID?
Critiques are always welcome.

Can't help with the ID, Vicki, but I really like the pics.

Vicki, your third picture was the key; it's a Brewers Blackbird... a male in it's summer coat by the looks of it. ;)
Google images show female with striped breast. Someone in the know will know :) What is it about barbed wire that makes such an interesting (for us) perch for birds? So much more pleasing than electric wires - lol.
gheesh - two people posted while I was typing :)

^^^Gotta be quick around here Linda.
While I'm not a fan of small birds shots, your's are dead on. Nice job.

Thanks so much Earl. I'm glad you liked this rather plain looking bird.

This bird was a bit bigger than the Brewers I've seen. The male Brewers are very black right now and have distinctively vivid yellow eyes. This bird's eyes were quite brown. These are just my observations, of course, and I don't pretend to know all of the species we have in the area.

It might be a large female Brewer's. I couldn't find a pic of a female Red Wing in either of my books and forgot I could "google." Does that make me OLD?
I agree about barbed wire. I would have been less tempted to take and post the shots if the wire had been plain. :-)

Good shots of hard to photograph blacks!

I'd have a Bald Eagle for my avatar, too, if I could find one to photograph. This bird was rather plain except for the subtle iridescent colors in her feathers that shined in the late afternoon light. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thank so much. Yes, black and/or white is tough. I took a stab at this one and got a little bit lucky. The light was just right to bring out a little of the subtle colors in the black.
How about a brown headed Cowbird
definitely not Redwing Blackbird or Brewes

That makes sense. Thanks.

The beak is wrong a Brown Headed Cow Bird. Besides... these heads are black and not brown. :D
And the tail is too small for a male Common or Boat-Tailed Grackle.
Looks a LOT like a Brewer's Blackbird to me... pale eye and all. BTW, the yellow eye is a characteristic of the very similar and closely related Rusty Blackbird. ;)
