I believe this is a female Redwing Blackbird since there was a male close by. Anyone care to post a positive ID?

Critiques are always welcome.

Nice.

It might be a large female Brewer's. I couldn't find a pic of a female Red Wing in either of my books and forgot I could "google." Does that make me OLD?

LOL

I received two bird books as gifts recently, and I still use Google, or a Washington State website. There are more images per species than are shown in the books :)

The beak is wrong a Brown Headed Cow Bird. Besides... these heads are black and not brown. :D

And the tail is too small for a male Common or Boat-Tailed Grackle.

Looks a LOT like a Brewer's Blackbird to me... pale eye and all. BTW, the yellow eye is a characteristic of the very similar and closely related Rusty Blackbird. ;)

OK I give up --change my vote to Brewers Blackbird based on eye color, the Rusty blackbird has a darker head and a slightly curved bill-- the head in the pic sure looks brown to me but lack of yellow eye eliminates cowbird

Great shots Vicki you captured the black birds coloring very well. The female redwing is a mottled brown, don't know what this is but you did well

Thanks for the thumbs up. I appreciate it but wish I had more colorful birds like yours in India.

The reason I thought it might be a female redwing was that there was a male near by. When I see Brewer's around, there are usually several at a time. Obviously I don't really know. This is pure speculation.

Thanks for looking and commenting Greg. I always appreciate your input.

Blackbirds are tough to photograph because of the blacks, and sometimes hard to ID, too, because of the iridescence of their feathers - so depending how the light hits them, the color can seem completely different.

This is a male Brewer's blackbird:

and a female Brewer's blackbird:

I think yours is a female Brewer's blackbird.
