My husband and I went to the Salton Sea to see if we could find some Burrowing Owls. I was told they came out early in the morning and at dusk. We had a three hour drive so we left at 4 AM. We didn't see anything in the morning but they started coming out of their dens in the afternoon. We saw a couple of dozen or more owls. This squirrel kept trying to get in the owls den. It was funny to watch. We didn't get home until after 9PM. What a fun day! Try the download if possible.

WOW! Great captures, it must have been a photo safari to top photo safaris, loved the shots. :D

Nice shots, the squirrel you are referring to is a prairie dog, and they live underground.

That's a baby ground squirrel. Burrowing Owls use the squirrel burrows for their own. SD Zoo actually has a program where they move in a population of ground squirrels to make burrows, (then trap and relocate them) so they can make a new habitat area for the Burrowing owls. Usually they don't cohabitate very well.

Really nice ones puglover. Just wonder why the owl doesn't attach his talons to the back of the ground squirrel and fly away? Thanks for sharing.

Love that last shot, those lovely, intense eyes, I'm surprise a squirrel would go anywhere near an owl's den, aren't they on the owls' menu?

I have a couple questions. What's wrong with the squirrel? Has he lost his hair, or is he a bald youngster? Why is he so brave as to be that CLOSE to the owl? Was he lunch?
These are really great. I'm sure that's a scene I'll never see with my own two eyes, so THANKS for sharing! The last photo is TOPS!

What an excellent series! The ground squirrel doesn't look like the ground squirrels in San Diego so I did some research on the web. The squirrel in the photos is a "Round-tailed Ground Squirrel", small with short hair.
