My husband and I went to the Salton Sea to see if we could find some Burrowing Owls. I was told they came out early in the morning and at dusk. We had a three hour drive so we left at 4 AM. We didn't see anything in the morning but they started coming out of their dens in the afternoon. We saw a couple of dozen or more owls. This squirrel kept trying to get in the owls den. It was funny to watch. We didn't get home until after 9PM. What a fun day! Try the download if possible.

That 2nd last image of the burrowing owl in "fight mode" is great, Terri. Very unusual pose.

Most of the "burrows" I saw near the Salton Sea were artificial drains when I went through there awhile back - is that still the same? (here in the Bay Area, the burrowing owl population has declined as urbanization increases, but most still use ground squirrel burrows.)

Beautiful shots. Hard to believe the squirrel wasn't lunch. Or was he? :D

I have a couple questions. What's wrong with the squirrel? Has he lost his hair, or is he a bald youngster? Why is he so brave as to be that CLOSE to the owl? Was he lunch?
These are really great. I'm sure that's a scene I'll never see with my own two eyes, so THANKS for sharing! The last photo is TOPS!
