My grandson who is a film major at Rowan university is a computer nerd/geek. He just replaced his parents PC with a MAC and they love it. They said the learning curve wasn't bad.

Am a long MAC user, and had many networked together at seven locations in old days when I had a business. Another words, prejudiced. Reason I chose MACS, learning curve was so much better. Could teach people how to use them in a concentrated day. I have Imac 24 and 17 laptop. Really like the 24, and Imac 27 is a very nice unit. But to the point - look what others are buying. Macs are dramatically outselling the rivals. It's market share continues to grow - and probably for a reason. And its not because its cheap. But having hardward and software designed for each other does make a difference.

If you like getting "under the hood" get a PC. If you just want to "put the key in and start up", get a Mac. They both run the same software. Speed is dependent primarily with the processor in the machine, the amount of RAM in your system and the speed of the hard drive (how quickly you can transfer the image to your image to the temp cache of your computer. The Mac looks cooler. The PC will give you more "bang for the buck". Did I mention the Mac looks cooler? Oh, I use both systems at work depending on what's available and, apples to apples, I look cooler working on the Mac! ;)

After using PCs for years, I bought an iMac about 2 1/2 years ago and I'm glad I made that move. Tech Support is fantastic. Also you can purchase "One On One" training for $99. It's good for a year and can be used an unlimited number of times.

I would have said it's a toss up until you said you wanted to do video. I teach on both platforms and love my Mac for video because I can run Final Cut Pro. I do most , if not all, of my photography work on a PC with CS5 and it is as good as a Mac.

I am an artist and was told by many people that Mac is the way to go for computers. I now have a Macbook Pro and am more than happy with it. You asked about DVD's....the process on a Mac is very different than PC....once you learn it you will find that it is very easy...as for the sound, my work is mainly on doing DVD photo slides and I add music to it. I do not know about movies and cutting of the film and sound. I am sure once you read and learn on the Mac (which by the way is difficult at first) it will be simple. Mac in my opinion is the only way to go because of many of the reason answered on this form and the quality of images it produces. Like a camera (which is also a computer) you want the best for your business.

Macs are great for non-technical people who like the computer to be in charge. I have had personal computers at home for 30+ years and made the decision way back in the early 80s to follow the PC route versus Apple because I felt they were too restrictive in their architecture. Most people who embrace Macs got their "dipping" in the environment they were schooled in and therefore believe they are best. Virtually all graphics design communities embrace Macs because that's the standard in that world. As a carreer IT Consultant I can say that corporate IT hates them because they are very difficult to manage in a large setting. We had 70K PCs and about 30 Macs (graphics arts department) in our company and spent an inordinate amount of time keeping them managed as part of the larger environment.

I recently had the opportunity to help a friend who is not technical migrate all his digital images from an older MacBook Pro to a top of the line iMac 27" i7, etc. It's a very nice piece of hardware albeit a bit pricey at $2500. I was surprised, however, that it had no USB 3.0 ports. It does, however, come with proprietary Thunderbolt (Apple-Intel collaboration) ports which once again scream "we're Apple and really want you to be only use our proprietary technology". As a lifelong PC user I really find the Apple OS/UI to be more difficult to use but mainly because I'm so accustomed to Windows. As far as functionality is concerned, it is no better or faster than my Windows 7 PC running Photoshop, Lightroom, or other digital imaging software and once in those apps they all work the same.

I think Apple is a fine company and owning several iPods and an iPad I think those products are the best. But for my PC I could never own one because of the cult like user mentality of the Apple community.

We only use Macs here and always have. Used to have a PC at work and it was a killer. Anytime you ever see anyone doing any thing really important they are using a MAC. Nuff said. :) :XD:

A long time PC user & after many years of both of my kids telling me to "just get a MAC", I finally did - a MAC book Pro laptop. Never though I would like the laptop for my main PC. I actually got myself & my wife one (hey, someone had to teach her how to use it). It was frustrating for a week or so and long story short - I WOULD NEVER GO BACK. I use CS5 and Lightroom 3 on it. One of the reasons........several months after owning them, my wife's calender file got corrupted. Apple (great support) told me I needed to reload the operating system. Ok PC users, you know what that means. Not with the MAC - it took 55 minutes to move all the other software and related files off to the side, reload the operating system and move everything back. ALL I did was hit the return key about 3 times - WOW. Just like new. Yep, I still have my Windows system, but only use it for a couple of financial uses that I have Windows software for.

Any further comments on the articles in "Shutterbug"? I've read them and my understanding is the writer has issues with the monitor, not the system. As a matter of fact, he uses the Mac Mini and a 2nd party screen. The bottom line is that photo PP requires not much more than a basic system. His problems with the iMac screen is that is backlit, shiny, and very difficult to color correct. Then he gets into some technical stuff I can't wrap my mind around.

I switched to iMac after I retired and had no further need for PC software or PC blue screens of death. I will never go back. Macs seem to handle memory issues far better than PC, certainly do better with security and virus issues, and offer a more pleasurable computer experience. On the other hand, one pays dearly to be part of the Apple experience.
