Well, I may have to spend a few days in Muskegon this summer... Not only do they have the USS Silversides museum but they have the LST 393 museum too. My dad served on LST 512 during WWII and I would love to see what an LST looks like and wonder around on one.
Thanks for pointing this out Stan. :)

The LST looks cool, but after I was done with the Sub shots it started to rain heavily so I didn't take any photos of it, the sub is about 2 miles west of the LST

Nice shots. I was once a bubblehead (navy talk) and really like your shots.

Chris, "Either you're qualified or you're not." Do you belong to USSVI? I've been on the Silversides several times as the Michigan Sub Vets (Escolar Base) hold their Memorial Day meeting there.

Can't hurt to ask. :) I have only been on the U-boat at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. They really did a nice job when they got the U505 inside. It looks like a sub pen and it's got some really nice displays and explanations. It's a little hard to get a tour of the inside because they sell out fast early in the day. I haven't been inside it sense it was outside but it's pretty cool and I heard they did a nice job on the inside as well.

Great shots as usual gtwhogger! Would love to get to see that boat sometime. Thanks for posting!

the 505 "inside" tour is fantastic, and you can take pictures of the inside; however there are still classified areas inside the sub that are off limits to cameras.....and yes, photographers are closely watched, when the "sensitive" parts of the sub are visited on the tour. be a polite photographer and don't embarrass yourself or give photographers, in general, a bad name by "pointing and shooting."

Didn't realize the water was deep enough for a sub.

If I remember correctly when they brought it in and positioned it they flooded the ballast tanks enough to rest it on the floor of the channel but they only had to about a foot?

I did a search online back last year and found some of the info on the museum and I guess it's still maintained to serviceable condition?

We have the USS Hood, a destroyer here on the river, they have a tremendous WWll museum down in New Orleans it is almost unbelievable how they have it set up. It takes about 3 hours to see it all. The best part is that most of it is hands on.
