CHOLLY...........grow up. Read the second amendment especially the part about " shall not be infringed". There are over 20,000 laws or statutes against the 2nd Amendment. I would love to see the same kind of and number of statutes against the 1st Amendment on freedom of speech or of the press. Lets hear the liberals screaming the sky is falling for a while. It is every liberals in governments dream to disarm the American people. Look at their actions they are all lyers Especially their leader.

Have carried since I was 18. At times I carried big time consisting of 14 rockets with 18 lb. warheads and thousands of rounds of 7.62 flex pack machine gun rounds (before the mini guns). Today my wife and I pack whenever it is legal. We both have CC permits and go to the local range at least once a month for practice. She carries a .380 Walther PPK and I carry a 9mm Walther PPS. I hope we never have to use either of them but we are prepared if the situation ever makes it an absolute necessity with necessity meaning all other options have been exhausted.

By FAR, this conversation is the most disappointing I've seen on this forum. So much laughable macho posturing and high-school grade responses. I am very nearly thinking of quitting UHH based on this topic alone. Can we PLEASE just get back matters of things our members know about? …F-stops and lens choices?
Haven't read all the responses, but does one have to be a single subject matter 'expert'. Some of the members here do know what they are talking about.

IMHO, quitting UHH because of a subject you don't like would be a bit silly. Read what interests you, ignore the rest. Surely there are plenty of photographic threads here.

Thanks everyone, for the quick responds. I realize that this is a very sensitive subject and I certainly do not want to start a debut on gun control, second amendment, etc. I understand all that and I respect everyone's views. But often times I have my eight year old granddaughter with me and her safety, obviously, comes first. Perhaps I've become very paranoid in my old age. The answer, most certainly, is to follow my conscience.

I have a question and I don't mean this to be flip but why would you go somewhere unsafe with your 8 year old Granddaughter? I guess I would have to ask what kind of situations do you take her into that you need protection?

I always carry - certain the practice saved my life twice. Think of it like car insurance or seat belts.

You know I never have in photography I guess due to the fact that I had to always carry and use in Vietnam while photographing targets. But I did carry while gold mining in the late 70's early 80's in Sonora California where at the time we had quit a bit of gold on us at any given time not to bring into account our equipment that we used also a small fortune out in the wilds where anything could happen, and many shady characters lived. Luckily and possibly due to the deterrent of the obvious piece on our sides we were never taken on though I do know those that were. Same may go for today's photographers who have a small fortune, just use your head and do not jump at the first impulse, get some training.

I'm not a real big advocate for carrying a weapon but lately I've been thinking about purchasing a handgun to to keep with me while out shooting (pardon the pun). I was wondering, do any of you carry such a weapon and, if so, have you felt more secure? I know the world has gotten a little crazy and I wish we didn't have to arm ourselves - I'm not sure what to do.

Yes. But not a gun and not for people. I carry Mace for Mt Lions.

Great idea about carrying mace for mountain lions. Don't they attack from the rear or sneak up on their prey. I would think that mace, if you could reach it in time, would be more effective than a gun, especially a rifle.

Never....just keep my eyes open and avoid sketchy areas, especially at night. No problems....knock on wood.

WHO... is trying to take your or MY guns away?

Sen. Dianne Feinstein
US army Lt. Col. Robert Bateman
Rep. Nancy Pelosi
Sen. Dick Durbin
VP Joe Biden
Pres. Barrack H. Obama
etc. etc.

Your response will be: "All they want are 'sensible' gun control laws"
