Old Nikon AI lens can be coverted for DSLR camera usage with a minimum charge. I just had my Nikon 55mm/1.2 old lens done for my Nikon 300s, and it works perfectly now in manual mode.

If the lens is an older F-mount it should attach OK but it will probably only work in manual. To be safe go to Nikon Customer Support and ask them about a specific lens and camera. Another forum to join and post this question is NikonCafe.

I've got another question about Nikon manual lenses. When people say that the lenses aren't compatible, do you mean as far as auto-focus and exposure goes, or will older lenses also damage the newer camera mounts. If I bought a good used D40, D60 or a D3000 or D5000, would the mounting be damaged by the old Nikkor f1.4 lenses used on a Nikon F 35mm. I've got 2 of these lenses as well as a Nikkormat with a couple of Nikon F mount lenses and would purchase one of the above cameras, if they're compatible. I've also got a few AI lenses and a Nikon FM10. Your help would be much appreciated!
I've got another question about Nikon manual lense... (show quote)

Any F mount is OK to mount. Auto focusing can't happen because the Cameras you list do not have a in body focus motor. Pre AI and AI will not meter on the Cameras you list.

I don't know about other brands but with Nikon they have the same mount, but you have to shoot manually and either get a light meter or just trial and error. I have a pre A1 F1: 1.4 lens and have take pictures with it but as I stated you just have to guess at the settings.

Thanks Folks! I wasn't sure whether it was an electronic thing or a physical thing with the way the mount was made. I'll definitely check with Nikon, if and when I purchase any Nikon DSLR.

Set your camera to aperture priority and then focus, stop down and camera will set the shutter speed.

With the D90 you can mount any Nikon F mount lenses. All non-CPU lenses won't meter on the D90. Most of the manual focus lenses are non-CPU. Manual focus lenses are generally of 2 types pre AI (before 1977) and AI/AIS (for all prartical purpose AI and AI-S can be considered the same). Ai lenses would meter on higher end cameras and can operate in A and M on those cameras. Pre AI would damage most higher end cameras.
The exception is the Df which can use pre-AI lenses and meter with them.

All pre-ai, ai and ai-s lens will meter with aperture priority with both canon, Sony and the new Pentax. Will need the adapter though which run between 20 and 300 dollars depending on the name brand you purchase. I use my nikkors on my canon and have great results. Much better lens build and finish. All metal and glass.
