Just ordered LR5 from B&H and am a little nervous about getting the hang of it.

Yes these books are perfect for first time LR users. However. although Lightroom is far easier to learn and understand than Photoshop, it will still take time and effort to learn how to use it properly. It is a professional level program that many pros use as a front end to Photoshop. Its not a simple to use entry level program with automated and guided features intended for post processing beginners.

I have read it and I found it to be extremely helpful. I like how Kelby writes and how there were photos to download, therefor providing the reader to follow along with what he discusses in print. A more hands on approach to learning LR rather than trying to follow what he's doing with ones own prints. I would highly recommend Kelby's book.

Hi Ottop,
I have both of his books on "the photoshop Elemenets12 book"
&
"the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Book for Digital Photographers"

I like the way he writes, but after going to his seminar "Shoot like a Pro", in Atlanta, GA yesterday, the impression I got from him was HE is astronomically hilarious!!! He is a motivational speaker and a real comedian to hear him talk in front of 375+ ppl and not miss a lick , well MY HAT IS OFF TO HIM.... BUT, it is still a business everything is geared to lead you to his online training videos. This is what I am saying what you don't see in his book will be in his video. The seminar was in Atlanta yesterday and was worth $99.00 just to hear him talk and rejuvenate me towards my goals as a Photographer. You would enjoy it. thumbs    !!!

I can say this about Scott Kelby, Adobe uses him as a reference to service their product sometimes, he must be doing something right. If you are near one of his seminars "SHOOT LIKE A PRO" I recommend going to see him    , You will also get a discount on the said books too. Also B&H was there at the seminar I went to yesterday.

I started learning Lightroom with Kelby's Lightroom 4 book. His sense of humor gets a little annoying at times but he gets the message across.
He starts the book (very logically) with importing and organizing. This is frustrating when you want to jump in and start processing some photos but it is important to go through this first section before you do anything else.
His Lightroom 5 book has to be a reheat of the 4 version. I highly recommend this book.

I didn't like it when I first bought it and almost took it back, but I couldn't find the receipt. Once I started to use it I found it to be very helpful. I now usually have it open when I am using Lightroom.

I've read several of Kelby's books and I can't comment on LR5 but I can say that he writes in a lighthearted, humorous sort of way that some people don't seem to like.

It took me a while to get used to, but now I like it. I got one or two of his "Lost" manuals.

I love his humor in his books. He is very clear with instructions. The one thing that bugs me a little in his Photoshop Elements books is that he refers some of the steps back to his previous versions of the books. He assumes people have bought the previous versions(I had but he didn't know that). I bought his series(1-3), The Digital Photography Book(s). I loved them. They give you one or 2 page lessons in terms my brain can handle. I also love anything done by Matt Kloskowski. He does a lot of classes and books with LR.

I use Kelby's LR5 book and have found it an excellent guide. I stated out as a new user of LR and at first found his lack of order frustrating. I don't mind his humour, just ignore it. My biggest gripe is that as a new user of LR I found that he was unable to get down to the low level of a newbie and he assumed some prior knowledge. At first this made his book difficult to follow however as I gained that knowledge of LR and some experience in reading his style I became better at understanding what he was saying and what he meant. It is an excellent book, albeit a little hard at first.

His writing does seem to be an acquired taste, but since I refuse to grow up it suits me just fine! I generally download the manuals I buy onto my Nook. No trouble taking them along on vacation or anywhere else should a question arise or if I want to try a particular technique that was mentioned in one of them. Handy reading on long flights also.

My photography teacher, who is a professional fine art and architectural photographer and long time Lightroom instructor recommends D-65 Lightroom Workbook - Workflow Not Workslow in Lightroom 4 by Seth Resnick & Jamie Spritzer ISBN 978-0-9852489-0-1 or 0985248904.

I have purchased this book and find it extremely well written and comprehensive. In my opinion it is good for both beginners and advanced users. It has many color images-almost one on every page.

Rather than publish a new edition when Lightroom 5 came out the author has published an ebook which deals only with the differences between Lightroom 4 and Lightroom 5.
I have not yet purchased this ebook-not sure if I need it.

The areas where the book has helped me is in naming conventions and file organization workflow, setting up presets, integrating Lightroom with Photoshop, how to use the develop module and printing.

I am only suggesting this as a possible alternate to Scott Kelby's book which I have not read.

Information on one subject matter is not in the same area you have to turn to a page further along in the book to find out all the information gave up on Lightroom any way, I prefer my Canon 5D. It takes wonderful photographs, I only clone out poles and odd things that arrive in beautiful areas.

I have Victoria Bamptons book on LR5 the missing FAQ. And though it is in B&W you get a free download of her pdf book in color with it. An excellent reference text and she answers many of the questions you may have in lr5 in troubleshooting. Victoria is always available by e-mail to answer any ?"s you may have and gets back to you within 24hrs. Good luck!!! The best videos on lightroom I have ever seen with 17 hrs of free training is on you tube by Hal Schmitt(bull), a former navy top gun instructor, who is very well organized and understandable. NO BULL HERE!!!
