Reality show snake-handling preacher dies -- of snakebite[b](CNN)]/b] -- A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality show about snake-handling in church has died -- of a snakebite.
Jamie Coots died Saturday evening after refusing to be treated, Middleborough police said.
On "Snake Salvation," the ardent Pentecostal believer said that he believed that a passage in the Bible suggests poisonous snakebites will not harm believers as long as they are anointed by God. The practice is illegal in most states, but still goes on, primarily in the rural South.
Coots was a third-generation "serpent handler" and aspired to one day pass the practice and his church, Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name, on to his adult son, Little Cody.

Well, hopefully, "Little Cody" will learn a BIG lesson from his now passed away father...DON'T SCREW AROUND WITH POISONOUS SNAKES!! In Jesus' name ... of course!
It's based on a misunderstanding of a verse from the Apostle Paul.

these people really have a problem.
idiot, improper handling of hot snakes is an invitation to disaster.
Everyone trained in handling venomous animals is taught first and foremost "control the fang end"
anyone what knows snakes will tell ya
"YOU MESS WITH SNAKES YOU WILL GET BIT"
SUICIDE BY SERPENT
I feel for the mans family. Sad for their loss.

You're right, but it's a misunderstanding of this verse. This verse does not apply to today. It applied to the Apostles and the early church.

Steve, is it a misunderstanding or result of those Christians that take the Bible literally? Bob Pavich claims to but I don't think he has taken up snakes lately or killed someone for working on the Sabbath. As far as "the verse not applying today", who made up that decision, God?

The misunderstanding is to believe in it in the first place.

Here is a good answer. My understanding is basically this, and it happened to Paul. If it's God's will for you to go to Rome to preach the Gospel and you are bitten by a viper on Malta, you will not die. However, don't go around picking up poisonous snakes to show off....protection doesn't go that far!!

It's a little known fact that rattlesnakes do not like to be held while making the sign of the cross.
god won't protect you from anything.
